Sabres-Bruins Series Preview.

 1A Buffalo vs Boston 1WC

We are back with another Playoff preview here on the ETEH Blog in 2026, so today we are looking at the 4th Series that was locked in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, as we're going to be looking at the Atlantic leader and the best wildcard team in the East as Buffalo who went skyrocketing after a subpar first few months that shot them to the top of their division, winning the Atlantic for the 1st time ever and snapping a 14 year playoff drought are going to be taking on the big bad Bruins who after a down year and having their playoff streak end last year wound up having a solid bounce back season, getting the 1WC spot and having a triple digit point total that has the Bruins back in the postseason.

History of Rivalry Between teams in playoffs:

Now if you look at the history of these two teams playing in the playoffs, they have actually played quite a bit as with this series the Sabres will become the 4th most common postseason opponent for the Bruins so they do have some playoff history but haven't meet in a while, so the first five meetings between these two teams that were in a ten year span all went Boston's way as in 1982, 83, 88, 89 and 92 the Sabres played the Bruins and each and every one went Boston's way but then in 93 and 99 Buffalo would get their revenge taking down the Bruins on both occasions before there most recent meeting and only other playoff matchup in the 2000's, as in 2010 the lower Bruins would take out the Sabres yet again, So Boston's won 6 of 8 playoff meetings between the two teams and will be looking for win 7 while the Sabres are looking to narrow the all time gap and get their first series win against Boston in the 21st century.

Season Series Record:

Boston 3-1-0 12-11+1
Buffalo 1-1-2 11-12-1

Each teams X-Factors: Benson vs Swayman

Next we go over to the two teams X-Factors in my opinion for this series and the two X-Factors in my eyes are Sabres rough and tumble forward Zach Benson and Bruins star goalie Jeremy Swayman. Now for the Sabres this is the first time in 14 years they are making the playoffs so a lot of their players are first timers and I do think they have a couple of Game changers but the one I am looking at for this series is Zach Benson, now he has been in and out of the lineup all season long but when he has been in he has been dangerous, he had 43 points in 65 games and has become a real pest to play against so for the Sabres if he can get under the Bruins skin and produce in the middle six then I think the Sabres have a good chance to win the series, when it comes to Boston plan and simple the X-Factor for them in this series is Swayman, now the Bruins have had a great bounce back season getting contributions from everywhere but I think if they want a shot in this series it comes with Swayman playing unreal hockey, if Swayman can steal them a game or two I like the Bruins chances but he is the great equalizer in this series, but those are my X-Factors for these two teams in this series.

Which teams are best at 3 Positions:

Offense: now when it comes to which of these two teams has the better offense, I think it is pretty obvious here who has the better offense, now Boston has had some really good start from their bounce back season like Geekie becoming a goal scoring Machine and Minten and Khusnutdinov breaking out but if I were have to give a edge offensively it would be to Buffalo as top to bottom they have a scary dangerous team, they can score from anywhere and have a great mix of youth and vets so in my opinion at least the Sabres have the way better offense.

Defence: on the defensive side of the puck I feel there isn't even any debate on who has the better defense here as well as I feel top to bottom the defensive edge has to go to Buffalo, and once again no offence to the Bruins who have a few dang good defenders like McAvoy and H.Lindholm but that defense doesn't  come close to Buffalo's who have top end defenders like Samuelsson, Dahlin, Byram and Power which makes the Sabres have one of the best defenses in the NHL, so I am giving the defensive advantage to Buffalo.

Goaltending: while in net I feel it is once obvious who has the advantage here except it is the opposite of the team who had the advantage in the offensive and defensive categories, now I hope UPL and Lyon take no offence to this because both have had great season this year including Lyon now holding the longest goalie win streak in Sabres history, but which ever the Sabres start will not be as good as Swayman, he is a olympics caliber goalie, top 10 in the NHL when on his game and could change the direction of the series, so no offence to both Sabres goalies but the Bruins have the advantage with Swayman.

Biggest on Ice Matchup: Sabres PP vs Bruins PK

So when it comes to the biggest matchup in my eyes in this series for the Sabres and Bruins, I would have to go over to the special teams and say the biggest matchup is the Bruin's PK vs Buffalo PP, now Buffalo's power play was not one their strong suits this year as they rank 21st on the power play with a sub 20% PP but if they can that going it could be a game changer as could the PK unit they are facing as the Bruins have not relied much on the PK all season long as the PK ranks 24th in the NHL at 77% and hasn't been a big tool for them this year, so I feel which one of these units wakes up in the postseason will be able to help lead their team to victory but I feel this is the biggest on ice matchup heading to the postseason for these two teams.

Predictions:

Now when it comes to my predictions for this series, I feel this should be a easy series to predict as it is a division winner vs a wildcard team but I have a gut feeling it may not be, now Buffalo was the story of the season heating up in January and finally making the playoffs and winning the division while Boston had a surprise bounce back season that saw them hit triple digits and finish only 9 points back of Buffalo at seasons end, now in my opinion for my predictions I am going with the division winner in Buffalo to win this series in 6 games as I feel this could be a closer series then some think and the Big Bad Bruins are not gonna be a easy out and I could even see a scenario where the Bruins on the back of Swayman win the series, but I will go with the more talented team and choose Buffalo to advance to round 2.
