Are the Oilers looking to acquire Alex Lyon from Buffalo?
So in today’s blog post we head over to Buffalo as according to a recent report from Friedman one of their 3 goalies is drawing serious interest from a Pacific team.
So according to Elliotte Friedman on a recent article, he says that the Edmonton Oilers have checked in, multiple times over the past couple of weeks with the Buffalo Sabres trying to acquire Alex Lyon. Now, this is a very interesting potential trade option for the Oilers. I think Lyon was signed as a free agent last year, he’s currently on a 2-year deal, AAV of $1.5 million, so he's got this year and next year left on his deal. Now, I'm not sure if this was before or after the Jarry trade, but they've been checking in on Lyon because he's a decent goaltender. Now I don't think he's a clear-cut starter, but he can be a really solid tandem goalie, 1B goalie or backup.

He's not a bad goaltender and he has the best save percentage on the Sabres, which isn't really a good thing in the Buffalo Sabres organization. So, we already know that Kenkelainen, the new GM of the Buffalo Sabres, recently came out and said that he wants to try and get rid of the three goalie situation once Colton Ellis gets off of injury reserve, Kenkelainen was part of the staff that did claim Ellis off of waivers, they have UPL signed for a couple more years, so with that in mind, it might make Alex Lyon the odd man out, now Lyon makes a $1.5 million cap hit and I'm not sure if the Sabers want to retain on him and I'm not sure if the Oilers can really fit that full cap hit under the cap at this point in time.
And the thing that makes this very interesting is as we just mentioned in a recent video, newly acquired Oiler goalie Jarry went down with an injury recently, so if this is anything serious, then that means that the Oilers will be pressing a whole bunch more to try and acquire Alex Lyon from Buffalo. So, I'm not sure if this is a trade that's going to happen, but I can see how the Edmonton Oilers really want to try and acquire Lyon with Kenkelainen now the GM in Buffalo and saying they might want to try and make some sort of a goaltending move and who knows what will happen, Lyon is still signed for a couple more seasons including this year and next year. So, it could be a very beneficial move there for the Oilers especially if Jarry is injured, so very interesting note there. We'll have to wait and see if something happens, but, if this Jarry injury is substantial, I could see these two teams hook up on a deal so definitely keep an eye on Buffalo and Edmonton and I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below and don’t forget to check out my YouTube channel.
