1P Vegas vs Utah 1WC
We are back with another Playoff preview here on the ETEH Blog in 2026, so today we are looking at the 2nd Series that was locked in the Western Conference playoff picture, as we're going to be looking at the Pacific leader and the best wildcard team in the East as Vegas who has had a really shaky season and haven't looked like their dominant self all season long but thanks to a coaching change the skyrocketed them to another Pacific division title will be hosting the Mammoth who after a pretty dang good season draw the Pacific side and are going to be a playoff team for the first time in their franchise history.
History of Rivalry Between teams in playoffs:
Now if you look at the history of these two teams playing in the playoffs, they have never actually met in the postseason so there isn't much history between these two teams, this is the 11th Western Conference team the Golden Knights are facing (haven't faced Anaheim, Calgary, Nashville or Seattle), and this is the 1st ever opponent the Utah Mammoth are every playing as this is their first ever playoff appearance, so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in this first ever meeting between the Mammoth and Knights.
Season Series Record:
Vegas 1-2-0 5-10-5
Utah 2-1-0 10-5+5
Each teams X-Factors: Schmaltz vs Dorofeyev
Next we go over to the two teams X-Factors in my opinion for this series and the two X-Factors in my eyes are Knights rope end goal scorer Pavel Dorofeyev and Mammoth top 6 veteran Nick Schmaltz. Now for the Knights they have a few guys who could be deemed as game changers or X-Factors but the X-Factor for this series at least in my opinion has to be Pavel Dorofeyev, now Dorofeyev has been the offensive driver all year long for Vegas and in a contract year he wound up having 37 goals and nearly hit 40 and also was 4th on the team in points with 64, so it is quite simple if he is scoring and producing I think the Knights have a solid chance to win while if he isn’t the offense may dry up again, while with Utah the X-Factor for them in my Opinion is Schamltz, now they have a lot of young game changers on this team but I think the biggest X-Factor has to be Schmaltz, he had a great year this season putting up 73 points and was second on the team in scoring and I believe if he can replicate that success in the postseason the Mammoth will have a good chance to advance, but those are my 2 X-Factors for this series.
Which teams are best at 3 Positions:
Offense: now when it comes to which of these two teams has the better offense, I think it is another series where the advantage offensively is so close as the Mammoth have built a formidable offensive group with some solid bottom sixers and the Knights always know how to roll 4 lines so both teams can score and score quite well but if I had to give a advantage in this series I would say it goes to Utah as the Mammoth I think have a slightly more well rounded offense this year then Vegas and some better depth players so I will give the Mammoth the edge offensively.
Defence: on the defensive side of the puck I feel it is once again debatable which side has the better defence as the Mammoth have some solid blueliners including elite guys like Sergachev and newly acquired Weegar while Vegas may have a slightly worse D-Corp then last year but it is still amongst the best with Theodore, Hanifin and in-season acquisition Andersson, so I think they at k up similarly but I will give the slight edge to Vegas as they do have a better blueline in my eyes especially on the 3rd pair, so advantage to Vegas defensively.
Goaltending: while in net I feel it is once again close between the two teams as to who has the advantage but this time I feel it is a little bit nor one sided as I do believe the Mammoth have the net advantage as I think Vejmelka who is amongst the top in most goalie stats is the better of the two goalies and whether the Knights play Hill or Hart I am definitely giving the advantage in net to the Mammoth as I think Vejmelka has been one of the best goalies this year
Biggest on Ice Matchup: Mammoth offence vs Hart
So when it comes to the biggest matchup in my eyes in this series for the Knights and Mammoth, I would have to go over to a very interesting matchup here as I think the biggest matchup on ice between the two is Vegas offence vs the Utah defence, now I feel the Mammoth are a pretty dang good offensive unit as they have some stellar offensive weapons with guys like Keller, Schmaltz, Cooley, Guenther and more and have a offensive unit that can score from anywhere and I want to see how they fair against Carter Hart who is most likely the start for Vegas as after Tortorella arrived he has become the starter for the Knights and has been playing some unbelievable hockey, so if Vegas wants any shot they are going to need Hart to play well for the Knights, but I feel this is the biggest on ice matchup heading to the postseason for these two teams.
Predictions:
Now when it comes to my predictions for this series, I feel this may be one of the series that could go either way as I think Vegas with their experience and play going into the playoffs makes a strong case to pick them but Utah has had some really good play this year and with all their young guys and the fact they almost had more points in the regular season makes a strong case for them, but in my eyes the Knights will fall to the Mammoth in 6 games in this series, I think Utah has a bit of a edge scoring wise and also have the advantage in net with Vejmelka so I think they will get the better of Vegas here, win their first ever series and get a chance to go to round 2 to face the other Pacific team.
