Sharks still targeting Schneider as a defensive upgrade.
Hey everyone in today’s blog post we take a look at the Sharks as according to a recent report the Sharks are still perusing a young Rangers defender in a trade.
So David Pagnotta was recently talking about the Sharks in a recent article and once again mentioned that the San Jose Sharks are linked to Rangers RFA defensemen Braden Schneider. So that’s not too surprising as we’ve talked about this a couple of times over the past weeks and months in my YouTube videos and blog posts as it sounds like the Sharks definitely have some massive interest in Braden Schneider, which makes a ton of sense.
The Sharks don't have basically anyone signed on their blue line beyond this year besides a couple of their younger guys like a Jack Thompson or a Sam Dickinson or Shakir Mukhamadulin and veteran Dmitry Orlov, those are the only few guys that are actually signed beyond this year so they definitely need some more guys on the blue line and they could look to try and re-up a couple of their UFA’s but getting one or two solid top four defensemen especially younger guys makes a ton of sense for the Sharks with the way their blue line is structured right now and Schneider I think would be a great fit.

He could be a solid top pair or second pair defensemen and they’re going to have to give him a contract extension, but the Sharks have money to play with so they could probably give him a long-term extension in the $6-7 million AAV range. So that would be my guess or something like that and I think they would be able to pull off a trade because they have two first round picks for this year and I know they're looking like they will miss the playoffs again this year and become sellers, but if there is a trade to acquire someone who's on the younger side of things and can help them long term, I could see them move maybe the Edmonton Oilers first round pick, maybe a couple of second round picks down the road, maybe they can move a couple of their decent prospects because they do have quite a bit of really good prospects on their system and not all will play with SJ.
So, I'm not going to say it's a guarantee, but I can definitely see the Sharks, even though I think they might lean more towards the seller mode right now because of how poorly they've been playing recently and because they're out of a playoff spot, I do think for the right situations, they could still be buyers if it was to get a player who could help them out long-term, Schneider is that player and as we mentioned quite a bit over the last little while I do think we could see a Schneider deal before the trade deadline or at the very least in the offseason, but it definitely seems like San Jose still has some serious interest in trying to acquire Braden Schneider and I keep an eye on him as potentially being a guy who winds up getting dealt in the very near future by the Rangers. We'll have to wait and see on that but I would love to hear your thoughts below if you think we could see Schneider get dealt in the comments, and don’t forget to check out my YouTube channel.
