Deadline deal recap: Jets acquire Schenn from Pen’s.
In today’s blog post we take a look at a trade that happened just before the NHL trade deadline between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets as they hooked up on a trade that was able to strengthen the Jets blueline heading into the playoffs.
So the Pens and Jets hooked up on a deal before the trade deadline and the trade is as follows, the Jets acquired Luke Schenn from the Penguins for a 2026 2nd round pick and 2027 4th round pick which are both the Winnipeg Jets, so this was a interesting trade here, now I talked about this after Luke Schenn was dealt to Pittsburgh a few days prior as I thought there was a very likely chance the Penguins would flip him because I didn't think they would just try and acquire him just to keep him, even though he's a solid veteran guy who has a lot of experience, so they flipped him here to Winnipeg, now Winnipeg was looking for some defensive upgrades to bolster their top 4 on the defence and someone who could work in that lineup and Luke Schenn’s going to be a pretty dang good addition there for the Jets.

He has this year and next year left on his contract at $2.75 million, so he's not going to be just a rental for this year, he’s going to be there for at least another year too, so really good stuff there and it's going to bolster the Jet’s lineup for their playoff run and it's going to help them next year too as Schenn is definitely more of a defensive minded defender and only had 1 goal and 5 points in 61 games with Nashville at the time of the trade, so adding a defensive missed 2nd pair guy for this year and next when they're probably going on another playoff run too is a very good and interesting pickup there for the Jets.
Meanwhile for the Penguins after acquiring Schenn with Novak a few day’s earlier, they decided that it would be better to flip Schenn then to keep him around and add some more draft capital before the deadline, so they are able to get another couple of draft picks as they get the Jets 2026 2RD pick and 2027 4RD pick, so it’s a second round pick in not this upcoming draft but the year after and it’s a 2027 fourth round pick which would be 2 years down the road, so it's a pick in next years and 2 years from now draft, so at that point not sure how the Jet’s are going to be doing at that point, most likely it'll probably be lower end second and fourth round pick, but still you never know how they’ll do and maybe those are going to be higher level picks for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
So a interesting trade here between the Jets and the Penguins as the Jets are able to help a area in need as they bolster the blueline for their upcoming playoff run and next year, while the Penguins who were in full sell mode saw a opportunity to get some draft picks and add to their current draft capital, so it was a really intriguing move and I would love to hear who you think won this trade as I feel that the Penguins getting a 2nd+ for Schenn won them this deal, but you let me know in the comments who you think won the draft.
