 Flames to go after big offer sheet?

In today’s blog post we are looking at the Calgary Flames as Darren Dreger was saying recently that the Flames are a team who seems poised to make a big move in the off-season when it comes to potentially offer sheeting someone.

Now we've seen how well the offer sheets have worked out this year for the St Louis Blues as I mean Broberg and Holloway who at the time of the offer sheets were looked at as overpayments and it was good that the Oilers didn't wind up matching them because those guys were drastic overpayments, but they have looked phenomenal on the Blues team this year as  Holloway has look fantastic in the middle six for St Louis and Broberg’s been a solid top 4 defender this year and those deals look fantastic right now for St Louis, so at this point in time it looks like maybe more teams could consider offer sheets and Calgary might be one of them for this offseason.

Now they do have a lot of draft capital so they could try it and I wouldn't be surprised if they target a team who's in a really difficult cap situation and maybe could try to target a RFA where they would give up maybe like a second round pick or third round pick, now I’m not sure if the Flames with the position they're in right now would go for an offer sheet where they would have to give up their first and third round pick for next year or more, but I do wonder if they could potentially make some sort of move via offer sheet, now I think they're glaring holes probably on their blue line as they have a decent forward group, but their blue line has definitely left something to be desired of and I think they do have a decent prospect here in Zayne Parekh who I think could be a really good prospect as soon as next year for Calgary, they already have a really solid forward group and some pretty stellar goalending, but I definitely think adding another defenseman could help them.

So I would look at cap strapped teams and part of me wonders if they could maybe target a guy like Buchard, I highly doubt that, but if McDavid is going to get a big contract extension would the Oilers really be able to fit a big term deal, but I think if the Flames really want to overpay for Buchard you're probably looking at a offer sheet of like three or four first round picks in a offer sheet and  I don't think they would want to do that.

Other guys would be a guy like Noah Dobson or Bowen Byram and both those guys are going to be commanding really high asks and if Buffalo or NYI don't really want to match those sorts of asks I wouldn't be overly surprised if the Flames took runs at Dobson or Byram in the offer sheet market, so we're going to have to wait and see on that, but Darren Dreger does think that the Flames are gearing up to go after someone in the offer sheet market this off season and it could be a bigger name RFA so we're going to have to wait and see on that but keep your eyes on the Flames as they may make a big move.
