8 possible trades I could see happen today plus waivers and PTO news

Today I give my opinion on some recent signings, and update on the PTO’s, some more Waiver news and 8 teams that we should watch for to make a trade as the roster get set to be finalized.

8 things to watch for today as the roster get set to be finalized:

In Toronto: there is still some word out there that the Leafs may move a player they want to move, they have reportedly been shopping Simmonds and may still want to move on from Justin Holl but maybe there is another player out there but keep an eye on the Leafs as something may be up there.

In Montreal: the Canadiens didn’t send any significant players down on waivers yesterday and it sounds like Slafkovsky will make the roster so the Canadiens as we have all said before still have a very crowded forward group and with almost not subtractions yet they will need to find a way to move someone so expect a forward (most likely Mike Hoffman) to maybe be moved before the rosters get finalized at 2:00.

James Guillory USA today Sports

Carolina: the Canes still have a pretty big amount of defensemen as Chatfield is still with the team and De Haan was signed and with this Canes team wanting to move salary I would not be surprised if Ethan Bear was moved  before the rosters need to be finalized as the Canes now have a deep enough roster and Bear is probably a expensive luxury they can’t have so keep your eyes on Bear as I think he could be moved.

Pittsburgh: the Penguins were able to move down Mark Friedman and send Ty Smith to the minors and while that Blueline isn’t to crowded anymore I still think they want those two guys in the NHL so I think the Penguins could still move Joseph before they finalize their roster as moving Joesph would allow Smith to come back in and the fact he wasn’t on waivers I think indicates that they weren’t risking him on waivers and that they would more likely want to do a trade so watch out as Joseph may be another piece we see moved.

Calgary: the Flames recently let go of Milano and Eakin from their PTO’s and Milano was a good candidate to be a top 9 forward in Calgary but now that he is gone it seems like it opens up another forward spot and I wonder if they wind up trying to acquire a top 9 forward before the season starts as they still have a decent bottom six but they could use another guy on that 3rd line so I wouldn’t be shocked if the Flames were trying to acquire a forward right now.

Edmonton: the Oilers are still trying to dance around the cap and be cap compliant but it is really tricky with their situation and following the trade where they got Kostin I would have to think that maybe he is a call up option if the Oilers wind up trading Puljujarvi as the Oilers could use the cap space that Puljujarvi has right and I think Kostin could still be a good bottom six forward for Edmonton so I think we still may see Puljujarvi dealt before the end of today.

Arizona: the Chychrun saga could possibly come to a end today as the Coyotes are most likely trying to find a good trade for Chychrun as it seems like a lot of teams including Ottawa, St.Louis, Columbus and Los Angeles amongst others all have interest in the defensemen and while it would take a big package of 3 1RD quality players I do think that there could be a team who steps up and gives Arizona what they want as getting a guy like Chychrun before the season starts would be amazing.

Winnipeg: the Jets could use another forward and have a logjam of defensemen on the roster right now so moving one of their defensemen most likely either DeMelo or Dillon to give young guys like Heinola, Samberg or Stanley some more playing time would be smart and the Jets also could use a forward as Stastny and Copp are no longer there anymore so I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if the Jets tried to use a defensemen to acquire a forward and help a position of need from a position of strength.

Here all all of the non waiver cuts that have been made to each teams roster over the last five days as the rosters get set to be finalized.

There are mostly depth players again on waivers today but there are a handful of NHL guys to and I am surprised at least a few more of these guys weren’t taken over the past few days. So a few veterans went through waivers the past few days and I can say I am a bit surprised as least one wasn’t taken as guys who were making over a Million who went on waivers would be Martinook, Janmark, Johnsson and Goalie Khudobin as Khudobin should still be a backup and the other would’ve made decent bottom six forwards if they were claimed, defensemen like Friedman, Connauton, Cholowski, Samorukov and Priskie were not take and I am pretty surprised as all five of those guys could be respectable bottom pairing defensemen in the NHL and a team who is young on the backend or has injury should’ve claimed one of them, and in the forward group Kaut, Bowers, Andersson, True, Dzingel, Pederson, Kostin Brooks and Zohorna all cleared and I thought at least one would’ve been claimed as these are all either players who can be serviceable 4th line forwards for a team or are very young and still have some upside and I am pretty surprised that no one was willing to take a chance on any of these but I am expecting some acquisitions on waivers later today as we near the roster finalized.

Here are two claims that have happened

Jonathan Kovacevic LD/RD (3 years left $.767 Thousand dollars) was placed on Waivers by Winnipeg and was claimed by Montreal. Kovacevic has been mostly a AHL player in Winnipeg and doesn’t have much experience in the NHL but he should be able to be a serviceable 3rd pair defensemen with the rebuilding Canadiens and will probably be able to carve himself a good opportunity with the Canadiens.

Sergei Belski USA Today Sports

Juuso Valimaki LD (1 year left $1.55 Million dollars) was placed on Waivers by Calgary and was claimed by Arizona. The former first round pick had lost favour in Calgary and couldn’t seem to find a spot in the lineup over the past few years and the Flames were once again trying to put him on Waivers but he was taken By Arizona and while Calgary loses a good defender the Coyotes are able to get a gut who should be able to prove he not only belongs in the NHL but can also play top 4 minutes with Arizona as once Chychrun is gone he should be able to get a elevated role with Arizona and be a excellent producer for Arizona.

With the rosters about to be announced only 9 PTO’s remain as it has been trimmed down quite a lot over the past few days.

Over the past four days there have been 13 more players who ended up being released from their PTO’s:

ANA: Brent Gates C (now back to being a UFA)

ANA: Josh Healey D (now back to being a UFA)

ANA: Nikolas Brouillard D (now back to being a UFA)

ARI: Alex Chiasson RW (now back to being a UFA)

BOS: Keltie Jeri-Leon (has since signed in the AHL)

CAR: Grigori Dronov LD (now back to being a UFA)

CAL: Sonny Milano LW,RW (now back to being a UFA)

CAL: Cody Eakin C (now back to being a UFA)

COLU: Ben Harpur LD (now back to being a UFA)

EDM: Jake Virtanen RW (now back to being a UFA)

FLO: Jean François Berube G (now back to being a UFA.

ST.L: Tyler Pitlick RW (now back to being a UFA)

TOR: Dylan Ferguson G (now back to being a UFA)

And another 2 that have impressed enough to earn new contracts and these PTO’s came from Toronto and New York R.

Winger Zach Aston Reese played well enough in camp to earn a 1 year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs that will have a AAV of $.840 Thousand and the deal is 1 way. Zach Aston Reese split time last year between Pittsburgh and Anaheim but showed that he can be a hugely impactful bottom six forward putting up 15 points in 69 games last year but I think that he could have a big year in Toronto and maybe reach 20 points for the first time in his career as he has the makings of a great 4th line forward and I think he will excel with the Maple Leafs.

Winger Jimmy Vesey played well enough in camp to earn a 1 year contract with the New York Rangers  that will have a AAV of $.750 Thousand and the deal is 1 way. Vesey has bounced around over the past few years from team to team but went to camp with the Rangers which was where he played his best seasons and he was able to get a contract and I think Vesey could try and show that he can still be a good top 9 piece in the NHL as he is coming off a year where he had 15 points in 68 games with New Jersey but with the Rangers he should be able to have a good role maybe on the third line for NYR.

Here is a list of all the NHL signings that have happened between SEPT 15th and SEPT 20th.

Metro

Columbus

Goalie Nolan Lalonde who was a undrafted free agent has signed his 3 year entry level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets and that will carry a AAV of $.798 Thousand Dollars and the deal is two way. Now Lalonde is not going to compete for NHL time right now as he still has a long road of development to go before he is able to make a impact and should go back to the OHL right now to improve his game but if he is able to progress well enough I don’t see why he can’t compete for the backup role in a few seasons.

New York I

Center Matthe Barzal and the New Tork Islanders have come to terms on a max 8 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $9.15 Million dollars and the deal will begin next year and is also 1 way. This was probably the biggest thing the Islanders had looming as a Barzal extension was needed maybe not right now but at some point and I think that getting it done right now is a huge weight release for the Islanders, as Barzal is a top Center and will be the highest paid Islanders forward following this year and while Barzal hasn’t been able to produce like he did in his rookie season lately I think that with a bit more free reign and better wingers he should be able to hit 80-90 points in the near future.

Atlantic

Montreal

Goalie Jake Allen and the  Montreal Canadiens have come to terms on a 2 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $3.85 Million dollars and the deal is 1 way. Allen came into the Canadiens lineup a few years ago to be the backup that the Canadiens needed and in his time with the Canadiens he has proved that as he was able to play quite well and this past year with Price injured he was able to show that he isn’t a bad starter either and in the long run we may see a Primeau and Allen tandem as the Canadiens now have him for the next 3 seasons but for this year Allen should be the 1A in Montreal and try and help them improve from a awful season last year.

Pacific

Edmonton

Right Defensemen Maximus Wanner  who was a 7rd pick in the 2021 NHL draft by the Edmonton Oilers has signed his 3 year entry level contract with the Oilers that will carry a AAV of $.847 Thousand dollars and the deal is two way. Wanner still has to develop some more as he is nowhere close to fighting for a AHL or NHL spot and should go back to play in the WHL to improve his game but if he can show he has some talent then in a few seasons I have no reason to think why he wouldn’t make a run at the NHL roster.
