It is day 2 of the Draft and I will try to keep up with all the latest picks and trades that happen today.

Major three team trade alert
First
Montreal New York I
2022 1RD (NYI 13) Alex Romanov
2022 4RD (MON 98)
And then
Montreal Chicago
Kirby Dach 2022 1RD (NYI 13)
2022 3RD (MON 66)
Analysis: the Canadiens were saying all throughout the week that they wanted to make a splash in the draft this year and they did just that as they moved Alexander Romanov and a 4RD pick or 98th overall to the New York Islanders in exchange for the 13th overall pick and then Flipped the 13th overall pick and packaged it with a 3RD pick or 66th overall and used that to acquire Kirby Dach. So this gives the Islanders a 4RD pick and Romanov, the Blackhawks get the 13th overall pick and a 3RD pick and Montreal gets Dach. So for Montreal first they have to give up the 1st picks in the 3rd and the 4th rounds as well as Romanov for Kirby Dach. Now I think the loss of Romanov will hurt this team because I think he is nearing a breakout year but they have the defensive prospects to absorb the loss of Romanov and while it is a hefty price I think to get Dach it was okay. Dach can now be the 2nd line Center for the Canadiens behind Suzuki and while they will have to sign him as he is a RFA I think they can do that and I think that Dach will excel as the 2nd line Center in Montreal and this was a great pickup for the Canadiens. Then for the Islanders they pay a steep price in moving the 13th overall pick but get quite I nice haul for there win now mode as Romanov is going to get a extension as he is a RFA and I would suspect that he will play on the second pair with Dobson as I think these two great young defensemen will be a great duo in New York I and the Islanders have filled their defensive need with this great addition. And for the Blackhawks they showed how much they are in tank mode by moving young Center Dach for the 13th pick and and a 3RD pick. Getting the 3RD pick helps them gain draft capital as it is the first pick in that 3rd round and they got Frank Nazar with the 13th overall pick and Nazar is a good young player with a lot of talent in his game and I think that in time he might be able to be a amazing top 6 forward but this helps fill the Canadiens Center needs, the Islanders defensive needs and the Hawks need to get Younger
Then there was a pick for pick trade between San Jose and Arizona
San Jose Arizona
2022 1RD (27 CAR) 2022 1RD (11 SJ)
2022 2RD (34 ARI)
2022 2RD (45 NYI)
Analysis: this is basically a high 1RD pick for a late 1RD pick and a early and mid 2RD pick. Not much to say here just that the Sharks were able to get some draft capital by moving down 16 spots and getting 3 draft picks in return while the Coyotes were able to trade up 16 spots because they saw that Connor Geekie was still on the board and they really liked him so they traded up to select him.
Then the Hawks used cap space to take on Mrazek
Chicago Toronto
Petr Mrazek 2022 2RD (38 CHI)
2022 1RD (25 TOR)
Analysis: the Chicago Blackhawks have now gotten a goalie they can use for the next few years as they take on the bad contract of Petr Mrazek and get the Maple Leafs 1RD pick at 25th overall for the 38th overall pick or their 2RD pick. The Hawks were linked to Mrazek for a while and they do end up acquiring the 25th overall pick for him and moved up 13 spots from 38th, Mrazek will be able to play as either a tandem or backup goalie in Chicago and he will probably ride out the final two years of his contract in Chicago and I think that he should do just fine with the Blackhawks and they Hawks got good D-Men Sam Rinzel who i think will be able to be a good D-Men in the future and then for the Leafs they do trade out of the first round which is not favourable but they were able to get rid of the awful Mrazek contract just by trading down 13 picks so this is a great piece of work for both teams as the Leafs get rid of Mrazek for not too much of a return and the Hawks got another 1RD pick for taking on a bad contract.
And then the Coyotes took on the Kassian con tract and got a haul
Edmonton Arizona
2022 1RD (32 COL) Zach Kassian
2022 1RD (29 EDM)
2024 3RD
2025 2RD
Analysis: this was a trade that needed to happen for Edmonton who doesn’t have much cap space as they move the 29th overall pick, Kassian, a 3RD pick in 24 and a 2RD pick in 25 for the 32nd overall pick. Kassian is a good middle six forward who can produce offensively and was a very loved guy in Edmonton but the $3.2 Million dollar cap hit was something the Oilers couldn’t afford so he will go to Arizona and get a expended role while the Coyotes moved up 3 picks in this years draft to pick Lamoureux and they they get some good draft capital for the future in the 3RD pick in 2024 and 2RD pick in 2025 and I think this is a brilliant move by the Coyotes to take this outstanding haul for a bad contract. As for Edmonton they still get a first round pick this year as they took Schaefer but while they do clear cap space which will help them in the long run they lose a character guy in the locker room and two future high draft picks to get rid of that contract so while I definitely don’t see this trade as a win for the Oilers it was a trade they had to make to try and make their team better.
Goaltender Marc Andre Fleury and the Minnesota Wild have come to terms on a 2 year contract extension with a AAV of $3.5 Million per year and the deal will kick in next year. I thought that Fleury was definitely going to go to free agency as I thought the Wild wouldn’t have enough cap space to sign him but obviously I was wrong. Fleury can continue to be part of the tandem in Minnesota and I think he can excel in the tandem role and it’s Minnesota for the next few years.
