Important info

This happened to be the first year where only the top 2 teams were able to move up in the draft as opposed to previous years where the top 3 were determined, and a team could only move up a maximum of 10 spots, which was another new rule this year and this ment only teams 1-11 could get 1st overall and teams 1-12 could get the 2nd overall pick and while teams 13-16 could also move up they couldn’t get a top 2 selection.

New Jersey was the only team to move up in the draft this year as they leapfrogged from 5th to 2nd and now own the 2nd overall pick in the draft while Arizona dropped from 2 to 3, Seattle dropped from 3 to 4, and Philadelphia also dropped, going from 4 to 5.

Montreal was able to retain the top pick in the draft, being the second consecutive team (along with Buffalo last year) to win the lottery after going in with the best odds, and the draft will be held in Montreal this year so there is another upside with that.

Also to note the Blue Jackets 6th overall picks and Sabres 16th overall pick we’re actually acquired in trades. For Columbus the 6th overall was originally the Blackhawks that will be transferred to Columbus via the Seth Jones trade. And for Buffalo the 16th overall pick was originally from Vegas  that will be transferred to Buffalo as a result of the Jack Eichel trade.

I would say the top 6 prospects in the draft are Wright 1, Cooley 2, Slafkovsky 3, Nemec 4, Savoie 5, and Jiricek 6, with Nemec and Slafkovsky as well as Savoie and Jiricek possibly switching depending on the team drafting and what they need, but stay tuned as I will have a full mock draft blog post on either Thursday or Friday.
