Quick game recap for Sunday and Monday.
There were a lot of great games over the last two days and I want to give my opinion.
Washington 4 Boston 2 Final
In a game with significant playoff implications the Capitals were able to come away with the win as they continue to crawl there way back from a wildcard spot. The Capitals were down 2-1 but managed to score 3 consecutive goals to get the win thanks to Lars Eller (10) and John Carlson’s (14) goal and assist and Ovechkin got his (45th) of the season as the Capitals kept 4 points behind Pittsburgh for the 3rd spot in the Metro. As for Boston they wanted to get ahead and try to inch toward clinching a playoff spot and couldn’t get the win. Lazar (8) and Haula (14) were the scorers for Boston while Charlie McAvoy had a assist to push his point streak to 8 games but the lost let Boston fall 1 point behind Tampa Bay and into the 1st Wildcard spot in the East.
Pittsburgh 3 Nashville 2 Final/OT
The Penguins were able to get the win and keep ahead of the Capitals while even though Nashville recorded a point they did lose some ground in the playoff race. While Jason Zucker was able to get a goal (7) for Pittsburgh the real stars were Rakell and Crosby as Rakell had a 3 assist night and Sidney Crosby scored twice (27 and 28) and added a assist, and the OT winner was Crosby’s 1400th point all time in his 1100th NHL game so some pretty big milestones for Crosby, as they help the Penguins get to 94 points and while they stay 4 ahead of the Caps they are also only 6 back of NYR for 2nd in the Metro. As for Nashville this loss gets them a much needed point but they would have loved a 2nd point. Matt Duchene (28) and Nick Cousins (8) both scored for Nashville as the Predators got a point that gets them to 87 as they remained in the 1st Wildcard position they are only 3 points ahead of Vegas who is out of the playoffs and are now 7 back of Minnesota and St.Louis for a top 3 spot in the Central.
Tampa Bay 5 Buffalo 0 Final
The Lightning absolutely destroy the lower level Sabres and with the win the move up the standings. The Lightning had a great performance to get back on track as Ondrej Palat had a goal (16) and a assist, and Kucherov (15), Hagel (24), Corey Perry (17), and Ross Colton (16) also scored for Tampa Bay who was able to get the win and get to 96 points and they leapfrogged Boston to get to 3rd in the Atlantic. Meanwhile the Sabres were shutout as guys like Thompson and Skinner had their point streaks end and falling to the Lightning the Sabres stayed at 63 points and while they are 5th lowest in the East they are also eliminated from playoff contention.
Minnesota 6 Los Angeles 3 Final
Minnesota feel behind early 3-0 but was able to rally and get 6 unanswered goals to beat the Kings and move up the standings. The Wild has to come from behind and use all there effort but were able to get the win as Jared Spurgeon (7) and Matt Boldy (13) both had a goal and a assist, Jacob Middleton had 2 assists, and Kaprizov (42), Mats Zuccarello (22), Marcus Foligno (21) and Nick Bjugstad (6) all also scored for the Wild who improved to 94 points and have gotten into a tie with St.Louis for the 2nd spot in the Central. As for Los Angeles they let a opportunity slip here as the blew a lead and this loss could be huge for LA, as Rasmus Kupari (5), Carl Grundstrom (9) and Adrian Kempe (32) all also scored for the Kings who remained at 86 points and are only 2 points ahead of Vegas with the Golden Knights having a game in hand so LA needs to play better to keep their playoffs spot.
Carolina 5 Anaheim 2
The Hurricanes got a much needed win against the lowly Ducks that kicked them past the Rangers and into sole possession of top spot in the Metro. Jordan Staal has a brilliant performance with a hat trick (11, 12 and 13), Andrei Svechnikov had a goal (28) and a assist, Nino Niederriter and Jesper Fast both had 2 assists, while Jordan Martinook (4) also scored for Carolina who got to 102 points and are now a full game over the Rangers with a game coming up against them. As for Anaheim Josh Mahura (2) and Troy Terry (32) both scored for the Ducks who remained at 70 points and are now Eliminated from playoff contention and after a great start miss the playoffs yet again.
Dallas 6 Chicago 4 Final
After a really tight back and forth game throughout the first half, the second half was all Dallas as they pulled away and held on as they gain in the West playoff race. Roope Hintz had a goal (31) and 2 assists, Jason Robertson scored twice (33 and 34), Jamie Benn (18), Joe Pavelski (27) and Tyler Seguin (22) all had a goal and a assist, while Ryan Suter and Miro Heiskanen both had 2 assists for Dallas who was able to get to 86 points and go back to 2 points ahead of Vegas for the Final playoff spot. As for Chicago Kirby Dach had a goal (9) and a assist, Patrick Kane had 2 assists, while Boris Katchouk (3), Jonathan Toews (11) and Philip Kurashev (6) all also scored for the Blackhawks but it doesn’t matter as they remain at 59 points and have already been eliminated so it just puts them in a better draft position.
Winnipeg 4 Ottawa 3 Final
Winnipeg was able to win the first of their back to back over the hurting Senators and they kept their slim playoff hopes alive. Nikolai Ehlers had a goal (25) and 2 assists, while Pierre Luc Dubois (26), Kyle Connor (42) and Paul Stastny (19) all had a goal and a assist for Winnipeg who got to 79 points and were only 7 points back of a playoff spot and kept up their playoff hopes. For Ottawa Brady Tkachuk scores twice (25 and 26) and a assist, while Josh Norris had a goal (32) and a assist so while this young offense continues to grow they are still a bottom 5 NHL team at 58 points but they are still eliminated and won’t make the playoffs this year.
Winnipeg 4 Montreal 2 Final
Winnipeg won both of their back to back as they get the game winner late in the 3rd and get closer to a playoff spot with that win. Morgan Barron has a goal (1) and a assist, Dylan Samberg has 2 assists while Evgeny Svechnikov (7), Paul Stastny (20) and Adam Lowry (12) all also scored as the Jets get to 81 points and are now only 5 points back of Dallas for the final playoff spot in the West. As for Montreal Josh Anderson (18) and Joel Armia (6) were the two goal scorers for the Canadiens who remain the lowest Eastern Confrence team at 51 points and remain eliminated from playoff contention.
