Florida moves Vatrano
Florida New York R
2022 4RD pick Frank Vatrano
Analysis: this is not the most significant trade I suspect ether the Panthers on Rangers make this week but it is a good one. First for the Panthers and the win here is they are able to unload the Vatrano contract for a draft pick as that not only frees up a roster spot for the Panthers but also some Cap space. Vatrano had $2.53 Million dollars on the cap and with him gone they can use that cap space on a top 4 defensemen or maybe a highly skilled forward like Giroux who they have been linked to and getting draft capital even if it is a fourth round pick is good because I could Florida trading out even more draft capital before the end of the week and that pick does have a. Condition which is the Panthers will get the power of the Rangers or Jets fourth round picks. And for New York R they wind up with Vatrano. Now I don’t really know if he is the middle six forward the Rangers have been looking for, I sincerely doubt it and I still expect them to go after a big named forward but they are getting a good player in Vatrano. He has put up 10 goals and 19 points in 49 games this season which has been a down year for him especially with him playing in the bottom six or even being healthy scratched sometimes due to the improved depth in Florida but he is a Pending UFA and as we said before varies a $2.53 Million dollar cap hit and with that I see him fitting in the bottom six maybe on a line with Chytil but I do believe this is a good trade for both teams and I believe nether is done making deals.
Florida acquires Chiarot
Florida Montreal
Ben Chiarot $1.75 (50% retained) 2023 1RD (FLO)
2022 4RD (NYR/WIN)
Ty Smilanic
Analysis: after clearing the space earlier today to make this move the Panthers get their top defensemen getting rental Ben Chiarot out of Montreal. Now for the Panthers they needed a top end defensemen and preferably a left shot defensemen and Chiarot definitely fits both needs for the Panthers. He has been playing top 4 Minutes in Montreal this season with all of their injuries, and was the most likely Canadien to be traded, and I do suspect he will play in my eyes in the top 4 in Florida probably on the 2ND pair, and with the Canadiens retaining 50% of his salary his contract will come at a cheap price of $1.75 million dollars and after they moved Vatrano’s contact out earlier they actually exit the day with $.750 thousand more cap space the they began the day with. Chiarot has had 7 goals and 18 points in 54 games this season his third with Montreal, and I think should fit well in the Panthers top 4 and may be the missing piece to put the Panthers over the top. As for Montreal they get a haul for Chiarot in which I thought would not be given. Firstly they get two draft picks, first they will get the 4RD pick that the Panthers got in the Vatrano deal earlier which means the lower of the 4RD picks in 2022 of either the Jets or the Rangers, which gives Montreal 9 picks in the first four rounds in the 2022 draft this year, and secondly the Canadiens got the Panthers 2023 1RD pick now this is what they were looking for in a Chiarot trade and they were able to get it now next years draft is deeper then this years and Florida had already traded this years first rounder to Buffalo so these are a couple thing that contributed to the 2023 1RD being moved but Montreal now has 2 1RD picks for next years draft. And finally they get former 2020 3RD pick taken 74th overall Ty Smilanic. Now he isn’t on a NHL contract as he is currently playing in the NCAA with Quinnipiac where he has had 22 points in 38 games this year and while he isn’t the most flashy prospect Florida had he looks to be a NHL forward probably at worst on the third line. So in review the Panthers get a highly sought after D-Men that will fill their hole on the blue line and Montreal who is probably just beginning with moving players gets their 1RD pick in next years draft some draft capital with 4RD and a young Prospect who could help their top 9 in the future.
Jarnkrok moved to Calgary
Calgary Seattle
Calle Jarnkrok $1 (50% retained) 2022 2RD (FLO)
2023 3RD (CAL)
2024 7RD (CAL)
Analysis: the Flames were reportedly looking for a bottom 6 center earlier in the day and have seemingly found it in this trade. Let’s first look at Calgary asthénie get Jarnkrok which in my opinion is a good fit, he was Seattle’s expansion pick from Nashville and was probably going to be moved if Seattle wasn’t in a playoff spot. He started the season injured but has played great as of late getting 12 goals and 26 points in 49 games and will be a key piece of the Flames as I do see him fitting probably on the third or fourth line as a veteran Center to stabilize their bottom six but all in all he is a good producer and will definitely help Calgary push for the playoffs. And for Seattle they don’t get any young players but in my eyes they basically stole this trade as I didn’t think anyone would trade three draft picks for Jarnkrok. The first is actually the Panthers 2RD pick in this years draft which will be a later 2RD pick probably but they now have a couple extra picks for this year, they get a 3RD pick for next year which will give them 5 picks in the first three rounds for next years draft and these two picks will probably produce good quality players, and they also get a 7RD pick in 2024 which will get them more draft capital which is good for a rebuilding team like Seattle. All in all in my eyes Calgary paid a bit much for Jarnkrok but at $1 million dollars with the retained salary I have no doubt that he will fit nicely in Calgary.
