3 Rumors
#1) Kotkaniemi a Cane
Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s offer sheet was not matched by the Canadiens on Saturday and is now a member of the Hurricanes. Kotkaniemi signed a $6.1 Million offer sheet with the Canes on August 28th. For Carolina they are a bit over the Cap but should have ways to become cap compliant. The $6.1 Million is only for one year and there have been rumblings that there could be a long term extension in place for between 4 and 5 Million Dollars that would bring his cap done and sign him long term and I think he should start on the 2nd line at left wing with Trocheck and Necas. Meanwhile this was a smart move for Montreal as even though they lost a quality player, the money would have screwed their cap situation up and because they lost him in a offer sheet they got the Hurricanes 2022 1ST and 3RD as compensation.
#2) Dvorak acquired by Montreal
After not matching the Kotkaniemi offer sheet the Canes flipped one of the picks for Dvorak. The Canadiens acquire 2nd line Center Christian Dvorak from the Arizona Coyotes for a Conditional 2022 1RD Pick and a 2024 2RD Pick. Dvorak is a more older and established 2nd line Center then Kotkaniemi is at this point in his career and Dvorak is also more established coming off a 31 points in 56 games last year. Meanwhile Arizona will get the Better of the Canes and Canadiens 1st round picks unless one or both are top 10 then the Coyotes get the worse of the two picks.
#3) Canucks worried about Elias Pettersson offer sheet
Elias Pettersson is one of a handful of notable RFA’s that currently do not have a contract and the Canucks are worried about him getting offer sheeted. The Canucks have about $15 Million in Cap Space to sign both Pettersson and Hughes to new deals and if some team offered Pettersson 9-10 Million it would be near impossible to keep him with the team but if a team were to sign him to a $9 or $10 million dollar deal then that team would need to give up 2 1st round picks as well as a second and third so the likeliness that this happens is probably very slim.
