NHL Offseason News and Rumors July 14

 News

#1) Skinner Waives

Jeff Skinner has agreed to waive his NMC for the expansion draft. This could help the Sabres protect someone like Asplund. And with Skinner signed for 6 years at $9 Million he probably won’t be taken and there should be better options.

#2) Miller retires

Kevin Miller has called it a career today and has retired. Miller was back last season after missing time with injury and was injured in the playoffs after having a solid season and will be missed by Boston.

#3) Minor Signings

Over the past 24 hours we have gotten 5 minor signings for players who probably will not be more than AHL level players as Anaheim signed three (Sam Carrick $.750 Thousand 1 year, Trevor Carrick $.750 Thousand 1 year, and Vinni Letteri $.750 Thousand 1 year), San Jose signed (Josef Korenar $.750 Thousand 1 year) and New Jersey signed (Colton White $.750 Thousand 1 year).

#4) Carolina acquires minor goalie

Carolina got a ECHL level goalie from Edmontonfor Future Considerations. The only reason there was this trade is so Carolina could sign or qualify him for expansion purposes.

Rumours

#1) Minnesota to go after Eichel with more cap

The Minnesota Wild bought out Suter and Parise yesterday and now have 10 Million more in cap space and that has led to speculation that they will be one of the lead teams to go after Eichel. They were already expected to call about Eichel but now they could be one of the front runners, and if they go after Eichel expect it to happen after the expansion draft.

#2) Nashville could protect 5 D-Men or trade one before Saturday

According to multiple sources the Preds have been trying to work out a deal with the Kraken not only to try and take Johansen or Duchene but also to not take the fifth defender. After Carrier took over for Fabbro in the playoffs they liked what happened and want to protect both as well as Ekholm, Josi, and Ellis. Now they could go the eight skater route and protect 5 D-Men even though most people think it is unlikely (NYI protected 5 D-Men in the 2017 Expansion Draft), and if they can’t reach a deal with the Kraken they could trade one of the five defenders before the protection lists are due on Saturday.

#3) Chris Driedger looking for $3.5 Million to sign a extension

There has been plenty of speculation that with the protection list due on Saturday that Chris Driedger who is a Pending UFA could be moved for draft picks before Saturday. Apparently teams were hoping for him to sign a extension for around $2 Million but the more realistic number is $3.5 Million as I suspect teams calling on him are San Jose, Edmonton, and Buffalo.

#4) Leddy being shopped before the trade freeze

Nick Leddy has been a great top 4 Defensemen for the Islanders for a long time but his time could be coming to and end. Leddy seems to be a prime candidate for the Kraken in the Expansion Draft ans to avoid that possibility of losing him for nothing the Islanders are looking to trade him before the roster freeze is in place on Saturday.

#5) Jake Allen could be traded before Saturday

Allen is a valuable backup for the Canadiens and is signed for two years  at a respectable price and is a very likely candidate to be selected by Seattle in the expansion draft and could be moved before Saturday. With his respectable contract Montreal might try to move him before the expansion draft so they don’t lose him for nothing if he is picked
