Important NHL Dates in July for the Offseason
July 8,10 or 12 Buyout period opens
The buyout period will open 24 hours after the Stanley Cup Final ends and there is a chance that ends today and the buyout period would start tomorrow but if Montreal extends the series to 6 or even 7 games then the buyout period would start on Saturday 10 or Monday 12.
July 13th deadline to ask players about NMC
For the expansion draft all players with a No Movement Clause have to be protected unless they accept to waive so this is the deadline for teams to ask players to waive their NMC’s.
July 16th last day for players to waive their NMC’s
In order to have a player waive he’s NMC the player has to agree to it as we have seen with Milan Lucic and his NMC so it is the deadline for players to accept waiving their NMC.
July 17th roster freeze and protection list must be submitted
Each team will have two options as to if they want to protect more forwards or defensemen for the expansion draft as they can chose 7 forwards 3 defensemen and 1 goalie or the 8 skater route however all 30 teams protection lists (Vegas is exempt) will have to be made and delivered by the 17th. Also the NHL will go into a 4 day transaction freeze and trades, signings, waiver claims will all have to be done before the 17th.
July 18th the 48 hour window begins for Seattle to talk to pending Free Agents
Seattle will have a opportunity to sign any pending UFA or RFA during this 48 hour window and if they are able to sign someone that player would count as the expansion pick from the free agents former team.
July 21st expansion day
Seattle’s time is July 21st as they will be selecting 30 players one from each team (Vegas is exempt) and will also be making side deals as I know may people think there is not going to be very many side deals but in my opinion I think there will be between 9 and 6 and after the 21st Seattle will official have a team and join the Pacific while Arizona will join the Central.
July 22nd transaction freeze is lifted
After the 4 day transaction freeze for the expansion draft has been lifted and the expansion draft is done expect a lot of movement weather it is trade or resigning players expect it to be very busy.
July 23rd/24th draft days
The first round of the NHL Entry Draft will be on the 23rd starting at 5:00 while rounds 2 through 7 of the Draft will be made on the 24th at 8:00 in the morning and I guess there will be plenty of trades on these to days.
July 26th qualifying offers must be submitted
All RFA’s must be handed a qualifying offer by this date by their respective teams or will be turned into UFA’s
July 27th buyout period ends
All buyouts must be made by this date as there will not be another buyout for about over a month.
July 28th Free Agency begins
New teams New Homes as Free Agency will get started and teams will shape there future as you can bet this likely would be the busiest day of the offseason.
