NHL Game Reviews May 20

 Florida 6 Tampa Bay 5 Final/OT

Florida does much better as Tampa Bay got cocky and they stunned the Bolts after spending basically the entire third period in the Bolts end and tying it up before Ryan Lomberg wins it in overtime. Jonathan Huberdeau had three assists, Radko Gudas (1), Alex Wennberg (1), Patrick Hornqvist (1), and Gustav Forsling (1) all had a goal and assist, Owen Tippett had two assists, while Sam Bennett (1) and Ryan Lomberg (1) who had the OT winner also scored for the Panthers. Sam Bennett has a eight game point streak (4G-9A-13P) and Alex Barkov has a seven game point streak (3G-7A-10P). Chris Driedger made 17 saves on 22 shots in the start before being pulled for Sergei Bobrovsky who made 9 saves on 9 shots in relief and the win. Florida was 2/2 on the power play (Patrick Hornqvist and Alex Wennberg both had a PPG), and also had 46 hits and 47 shots. For Tampa Bay Mathieu Joseph replaced Luke Schenn and for Florida Sam Bennett who finished his suspension replaced Keith Yandle who sat in a game for the first time since 2009. Victor Hedman had three assists, Alex Killorn (1) and Brayden Point (3) each had a goal and assist, while Steven Stamkos (2), Ross Colton (1), and Anthony Cirelli (1) also scored for the Lightning. Steven Stamkos has a four game point streak (3G-2A-5P). Andrei Vasilevskiy made 41 saves in the loss. The Lightning were 2/3 on the power play (Point and Killorn scored on the power play), and also had 40 hits and 31 shots. My thoughts: this was exactly the thought I had when I said that Florida would win the series. There offense winning games for them like last night and now the Panthers are back in the series. Tampa Bay leads best of seven series 2-1, Game 4 Saturday at 9:30.

Pittsburgh 5 New York I 4 Final

Jeff Carter keeps on showing why the Penguins picked him up at the trade deadline and the late goal from Brandon Tanev gave Pittsburgh the win and series lead. Kris Letang had a goal (1) and two assists, Jeff Carter scored twice (2 and 3), Evgeni Malkin had two assists, while Jason Zucker (1) and Brandon Tanev (1) also scored for the Penguins. Jeff Carter has a  five game point streak (8G-1A-9P). Tristan Jarry made 26 saves in the win. The Penguins were 1/2 on the power play (Jeff Carter’s second was the PPG), and also had 29 hits and 27 shots. Pittsburgh has the lone lineup change as a healthy Evgeni Malkin replaced Evan Rodrigues who is now a healthy scratch. Scott Mayfield had a goal (1) and two assists, Cal Clutterbuck scored twice (1 and 2), Matthew Barzal had two assists, while Anthony Beauvillier (1) also scored for the Islanders. Semyon Varlamov made 22 saves in the loss. The Islanders were 1/4 on the power play (Anthony Beauvillier got the PPG), and also had 47 hits and 30 shots. My thoughts: Pittsburgh is rocking and just as I said Pittsburgh has a way to score on the Islanders which is why I picked the Penguins to win the series and they close in on winning the series with the win. Pittsburgh leads best of seven series 2-1, Game 4 Saturday at 12:00.

Montreal 2 Toronto 1 Final

Montreal has suprised by winning game 1 and taking the series lead but a bad thing happened as John Tavares was injured and carried off on a stretcher. Josh Anderson (1) and Paul Byron (1) both scored for the Canadiens. Carey Price made 35 saves in the win. The Canadiens were 0/5 on the power play but Paul Byron’s goal was short handed, and also had 55 hits and 30 shots. Rasmus Sandin and Jack Campbell each made their playoff debut. William Nylander (1) was the lone goal scorer for the Maple Leafs. Jack Campbell made 28 saves in the loss. The Maple Leafs were 0/4 on the power play, and also had 27 hits and 36 shots. My thoughts: Montreal suprised me as I thought for sure that the Maple Leafs would not allow a win against the Canadiens but I was wrong and one thing I did not expect was John Tavares being injured and the injury sort of rattled the Leafs. Montreal leads best of seven series 1-0, Game 2 Saturday 4:00.

Vegas 5 Minnesota 2 Final

Vegas pulled off a come from behind victory from down two goals to win 5-2 and that was their first regulation win in Minnesota against Minnesota in franchise history. Joel Eriksson Ek (2) and Ryan Hartman (1) both scored for the Wild. Cam Talbot made 35 saves in the loss. The Wild were 0/2 on the power play, and also had 31 hits and 16 shots. My thoughts: I was really worried about how the Golden Knights would fair having not Beaten Minnesota in Minnesota in their four year history but their depth showed in a very good win.
