 Playoffs

New York I 4 Pittsburgh 3 Final/OT

The Islanders get the series lead behind Kyle Palmeri’s overtime winner and Ilya Sorokin’s great performance in his first playoff game. Jean Gabriel Pageau had a goal (1) and two assists, Kyle Palmeri had two goals (1 and 2) including the overtime winner, Brock Nelson (1) also scored for the Islanders. Anthony Beauvillier has a eight game point streak (5G-4A-9P). Ilya Sorokin made 39 saves in his first playoff start and first playoff win. The Islanders were 0/2 on the power play, and they also had 71 hits and 42 shots in the win. Evan Rodrigues, Oliver Wahlstrom and Ilya Sorokin each made their Playoff debuts. Kasperi Kapanen (1), Sidney Crosby (1), and Fredric Gaudreau (1) all scored for the Penguins. Fredric Gaudreau has a four game point streak (1G-5A-6P). Tristan Jarry made 37 saves in the overtime loss. The Penguins were 0/3 on the power play, and they also had 47 hits and 42 shots in the loss. My thoughts: I think that the Islanders found their offense and Kyle Palmeri who could barely score when arriving in New York found the net twice. New York I leads the best of 7 series 1-0, Game 2 Tuesday at 4:30.

Minnesota 1 Vegas 0 Final/OT

In what was a battle of the goalies between Fleury and Talbot Minnesota is walking away with the 1-0 lead thanks to Joel Eriksson Ek and Cam Talbot. Joel Eriksson Ek (1) was the lone goal scorer and the overtime winner for the Wild. Cam Talbot made 42 saves in the shutout and win. The Wild were 0/2 on the power play, and also had 71 hits and 30 shots in the win. Kirill Kaprizov, Victor Rask, Keegan Kolesar, and Nick Hague all made their playoff debut’s in today’s game. Vegas was shutout in a playoff game for the first time since Game 1 of the West Final last year. Marc Andre Fleury made 29 saves in the loss. Vegas was 0/3 on the power play, and also had 57 hits and 42 shots. My thoughts: I thought there would have been more goals but both goalies played really well including Talbots with his 42 save shutout and Minnesota takes the 1-0 lead in the series. Minnesota leads the best of seven series 1-0, Game 2 Tuesday at 7:00.

Tampa Bay 5 Florida 4 Final/OT

Tampa Bay was able to win a back and forth game in which their were five lead changes but Brayden Point’s late two goals give Tampa the lead. Nikita Kucherov has two goals (1 and 2) and a assist, Victor Hedman had three assists, Brayden Point scored twice (1 and 2) including the game winner, Steven Stamkos and Ryan McDonagh each had two assists, while Blake Coleman (1) also scored for the Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 35 saves in the win. Tampa Bay was 3/4 on the power play ( both of Kucherov’s goals and Points first all came on the power play), and also had 36 hits and 40 shots. Ross Colton, Owen Tippett, Mason Marchment, Gustav Forsling, Anthony Duclair, and Ryan Lomberg all made their Playoff debut. Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal (1) and two assists, Owen Tippett (1) and Alex Barkov (1) both had a goal and assist, Keith Yandle and Sam Bennett each had two assists, while Carter Verhaeghe (1) also scored for the Panthers. Alex Barkov has a five game point streak (3G-5A-8P) and Sam Bennett has a seven game point streak (3G-9A-12P). Sergei Bobrovsky made 35 saves in the loss. Florida was 1/3 on the power play (Alex Barkov scores the PPG), and also had 54 hits and 39 shots. My Thoughts: almost everything went as I thought in this game it was high scoring, evenly matched and Florida is the better team. But the one thing i didn’t know was how good the power play for Tampa would be. They out scored Florida 3-1 on the man advantage and if Florida wants to win they have to do better on the penalty kill. Tampa Bay leads best of seven series 1-0 Game 2 on Tuesday at 5:00.
