1M Carolina vs Montreal 3A
We are back with another Playoff preview here on the ETEH Blog, so today we are looking at the the 2nd of 2 Conference Final Matchups, as we're going to be looking at the Eastern Conference Final as the Hurricanes who blew by in the regular season winning the Eastern Conference, took down the Senators in short order in sweep form and then also swept the Flyers in round 2 to be the first team to start 8-0 in the playoffs since the 80's Oilers, and they will be taking on the Montreal Canadiens who after a 4 year rebuild hit the triple digits this year and finished top 3 in the Atlantic, they were able to take down 2 top 5 teams in the regular season as they narrowly escaped Tampa in round 1 with a 7 game series win and then took down Buffalo in a 7 game series as well to get to their first Conference Final since 2021 when they won the West.
History of Rivalry Between teams in playoffs:
Now if you look at the history of these two teams playing in the playoffs, they have met a few times in the postseason and most were actually when the Canes were the Hartford Whalers, as back before Carolina relocated the Whalers and Habs met 5 times including in 1980, 86, 88, 89, and 92 so they had 5 postseason meetings and every one of them went in the Habs favor as the Habs were 5-0 against the Whalers, then they would not play in the postseason again until Hartford relocated to Carolina where they met in the 2002 and 2026 postseason and both times the Hurricanes emerged victorious, so even though the Habs are 5-2 against the Canes in the postseason they still haven't beat Carolina as the Canes, so it will be interesting to see if the Habs finally beat the Canes as Carolina or if Carolina wins like the last two meetings.
Season Series Record:
Carolina 0-3-0 8-15-7
Montreal 3-0-0 15-8+7
Each teams X-Factors: Newhook vs Hall
Next we go over to the two teams X-Factors in my opinion for this series and the two X-Factors in my eyes are the Canes solid 2nd liner Taylor Hall and Habs 3rd liner Alex Newhook. Now I feel both of these players are going to be key to their teams success. Now for the Hurricanes they have a few game breakers but I think one of their most productive players in the playoffs will have to continue to be great and that is Hall, now in the first two rounds Hall was apart of one of the most productive lines in the NHL with Stankoven and Blake as Hall lead the Canes in points and with the top line struggling he helped pick up the pace and I feel if the Canes want to get to the cup he will have to be good again, meanwhile in Montreal I think going into this series they also ahev a few game breakers but Newhook for me is there X-Factora, now the top line like Carolina's has been lackluster in the postseason and in round 2 Newhook picked up the slack scoring 6 against Buffalo including the series clinching goal in game 7, so if the Habs want any shot at getting past Carolina they will have to hope Newhook can replicate his succes from round 2, but those are my X-Factors for the 2 teams.
Which teams are best at 3 Positions:
Offense: now on the offensive side of the puck, it is a pretty interesting matchup between the Habs and Canes as both teams haven't gotten great production from their top players and have both relied on their great depth to win games in the postseason but if I had to give a team a advantage offensively then I would probably give it to Montreal because as much as the Canes have a pretty solid forward group and can score with the best of them I feel the depth in Montreal is a tiny bit better so I would give the advantage to Montreal on the Offensive side.

Defence: now defensively these teams both have fantastic defensive players as they have puck movers, shutdown guys as well as both teams being pretty much healthy entering the ECF, but if I had to give a edge defensivly I would give it to Carolina as I think even with the young star in Hutson the Habs blueline is weaker and more inexperienced then Carolina's and I think with the d-corp that has Slavin, Gostisbehere and Nikishin it is quite hard to bet against them, so I would give the D edge to Carolina.
Goaltending: and lastly in Net you have Andersen for Carolina and Dobes for Montreal and unlike the WCF these two goalies have both been spectacular as Andersen started 8-0 for the Hurricanes and has been putting up some unreal numbers while Dobes has been spectacular especially after a loss and even though he has had some off games he has been great, so in my eyes I will go with experience and say the Canes have the advantage because Andersen has proven he can play well in big games but it is a razer thin margin, but either way Carolina has the goalie edge.
Biggest on Ice Matchup: Canes top unit vs Habs top unit
Now in my opinion the biggest on ice matchup between these two teams in this series has to be the the two top units for the teams going at it. Because if any of you have watched the postseason you will know that both top units have been rather lackluster in the postseason, as the Habs have had the better top line as in the first 2 rounds the Habs got 13 points out of Suzuki and Caufield and Slafkovsky both have 9 and while those stats look alright a ton of those points came during blowouts, so that unit will be facing Aho, Jarvis and Svechnikov who didn't have much to show after the first 2 rounds as Jarvis and Aho both have 4 points while Svechnikov has 3, so in my eyes this is the matchup to watch for in this series as I think whichever top line is able to produce will help their team to be the ECF winners and move on to the Cup Final.
Predictions:
Now when it comes to my predictions for the ECF I think this is going to be a close series as even though the Canes are undefeated and 8-0 in this postseason I still feel the Habs have a great chance to upset as they have taken down top teams in the first few rounds and they have a fantastic young roster so in my eyes with Carolina's track record of doing poorly in ECF ( Swept in 09, 19, 23 and lost in 5 last year) and Montreal looking like they can hang with just about anyone I am taking Habs in 6, now I wouldn't be shocked if the Canes won the series nor would I mind it, but with Carolina's track record in ECF I just can't pick them right now and I think Dobes will be great again for the Habs so with all of that said I think the Habs win and advance to their first Cup Appearance since 2021.
