Live 2nd draft day blog

Huge trades happen on draft day 2.

3 Trades that involved players

      Chicago                              Tampa Bay

Corey Perry (UFA)               2024 7RD (CHI)

     Chicago                          New York I

     J.Bailey                   Future Considerations

2026 2RD (NYI)

Analysis: we will cover both of the Hawks trades together as they continue to get better and use their cap space to their advantage. Now in the first trade, they acquire Josh Bailey from the Islanders as well as their 2nd round pick in the 2026 draft in exchange for nothing in future considerations. Now for NYI this was a smart move given the fact that Bailey was basically a healthy scratch late last year and in the playoffs, and entering the final year of his deal at $5 Million dollars, they could do a lot with that cap space, so moving him was smart and it opens the door for them to do more this offseason and although they had to pay the Hawks a 2nd round pick to take him on, I still think it was a smart move for NYI.

Now for the Hawks they were able to get a 2nd round pick which made this deal worthwhile for them and gives them asset for down the road, while Bailey won’t be on the Hawks for a while, as just after they acquired him it was announced that he would be bought out and after playing over 1000 games in the Isles organization, Bailey will now be looking for his first new team in his career, while the cap penalty for Chicago is $2.6 Million for this year and $1.16 Million for next year and with the amount of cap space they have that isn’t a problem for them, so the Islanders are able to move Bailey’s $5 Million dollars off their books, Bailey will go to free agency and try to find a place where he can play, and the Hawks get a 2nd round pick for buying out Bailey, that is a solid deal in my eyes for all three parties involved and I hope Bailey finds a nice new home as number 42 on the End to End Hockey’s trade bait list is now gone.

As for the other deal, the Tampa Bay Lightning acquired a 2024 7th Round pick from the Hawks in exchange for the signing rights to Corey Perry. Now for the Lightning side of things, Perry was never going to re-up with the Bolts as even though he has played well there, his cap hit would be too much for the Bolts to pay, so with that and knowing they weren’t going to be able to sign him, they move his signing rights to Chicago and are able to get a 7th round draft pick in return, so even though it will most likely be a top end 7th round pick and it isn’t a overly great pick to get, at least the Lightning are able to come away with something for a player they weren’t going to have back. As for the Hawks they are able to pick up the signing rights to another solid veteran before free agency starts. Now Perry is coming off a solid season and if he is able to come to terms on a extension with the Hawks I would definitely think he would be a middle six forward with Chicago and may be able to get ample playing time, and there is some speculation he will sign a deal that is similar to the win Foligno signed, so that will definitely be interesting but this is another solid top 9 veteran who if the Hawks can keep around will be someone who can use his experience on the team and maybe be flipped at the deadline, so I think this was a great move for both the Bolts and Hawks.

Detroit                                   Edmonton

Kailer Yamamoto        Future Considerations

Klim Kostin (RFA)

Analysis: the Red Wings are able to benefit from the Oilers tight cap situation as the Oilers wing up moving two former 2017 1RD picks in Kostin and Yamamoto to the Red Wings in exchange for future considerations or nothing. Now for Edmonton there was a lot of speculation that Yamamoto was going to be moved at some point this offseason, as he is a solid middle six forward with good potential but has always been really inconsistent and with him making a $3.1 Million dollar cap hit, the Oilers felt they could get someone cheaper to fill his role on the team and they are able to get some more cap space they should be able to use to improve the teams middle six and D-Corp, meanwhile I am surprised Kostin was moved, as he is a pending RFA and was a extremely good bottom six forward in Edmonton after they acquired him and I think the Oilers thought his cap was going to be too high for them, so they wind up moving him in this deal too and they will probably look for some cheaper forwards on the market to replace guys like these, meanwhile the Wings already had a solid forward group and they are able to add to it here, now I see Kostin resigning with the Wings and taking a solid checking role on the team on either the 3rd or 4th line and I think he could be a extremely productive six forward for Detroit, while Yamamoto I think should be able to slot in the Wings middle six and maybe with a bit more of a opportunity then he got last year Yamamoto can become a bit more consistent and show his scoring ability like he did a few years ago, so in my eyes this is a full blown win for Detroit, as I think these two are good players and although the Oilers get cap space, I do think this hurts their bottom six, while the Red Wings add two more key guys, a bottom six player in Kostin and a middle six forward in Yamamoto, and I do wonder what the acquisition means for guys like Zadina or Kubalik who I could see now being bumped out of the top 9, but definitely a interesting move for both sides and I would love to hear your thoughts on the deal.

Quick Analysis: Sidorov is a great pick here for the Ducks, as I think if Sidorov is able to develop well in the Ducks system they could eventually have a solid 3rd line winger in him.

86 (BUF via LA)

Player: Gavin McCarthy

Team: Muskegon, USHL

Stats: 8-19-27 in 42 GP

Position: RD

Size: 6’2 186

Quick Analysis: solid pick here for Buffalo as I do think McCarthy as the ability to maybe be a 3rd pair defensemen in the NHL.

87 (PHI via NYR )

Player: Yegor Zavragin

Team: Mamonty Yugry, MHL

Stats: .920 SV% and a 2.49 GAA in 21 GP

Position: G

Size: 6’2 183

Quick Analysis: I think Zavragin is a solid goalie prospect and while it might have been a stretch to take him here, along with Bjarnsson who Philly picked earlier, I think the Flyers are drafting their future in Net.

88 (ARI via EDM)

Player: Vadim Moroz

Team: Dinamo Minsk, KHL

Stats: 5-9-14 in 39 GP

Position: RW

Size: 6’2 185

Quick Analysis: decent pickup here from Arizona who take another player in this draft, and I think that after a few years developing he should be a solid 3rd line forward for them.

89 (VAN via TOR)

Player: Sawyer Mynio

Team: Seattle, WHL

Stats: 5-26-31 in 68 GP

Position: LD

Size: 6’1 163

Quick Analysis: Canucks add to the defensive prospect pool with another defender in this draft, as I do think Mynio has a chance to be a solid 3rd pair defensemen.

90 (NYR via PIT and NJ)

Player: Drew Fortescue

Team: US National U18 Team, NTDP

Stats: 1-25-26 in 62 GP

Position: LD

Age: 6’1 176

Quick Analysis: Fortescue is a solid pick for the Rangers as it gives them another defensive prospect and I think in time he could be a good bottom pairing defensemen.

91 (PIT via NYR and COL)

Player: Emil Pieniniemi

Team: Karpat Liiga

Stats: 0-0-0 in 1 GP

Position: LD

Size: 6’2 175

Quick Analysis: Pieniniemi is a decent defensive prospect who I think in time could be a decent defensemen in the Pens organization.

92 (BOS)

Player: Christopher Pelosi

Team: Sioux Falls, USHL

Stats: 13-6-19 in 43 GP

Position: C

Size: 6’1 181

Quick Analysis: Pelosi seems to be a solid Center for the Bruins and I do think long term he could be a good defensive 3rd line Center for the Bruins.

93 (CHI via DAL and ARI)

Player: Jiri Felcman

Team: Langnau U20, U20-Elit

Stats: 10-21-31 in 40 GP

Position: C

Size: 6’4 190

Quick Analysis: solid draft selection as I do think Felcman could be a solid bottom six Center long term for the Hawks.

94 (CAR through SJ)

Player: Jayden Perron

Team: Chicago, USHL

Stats: 24-48-72 in 61 GP

Position: RW

Size: 5’9 166

Quick Analysis: Perron is a solid player who I think here is a steal given the fact I had him going in the early part of round 2 and I think after developing he should be a solid middle six winger in the NHL.

95 (PHI via FLO)

Player: Denver Barkey

Team: London, OHL

Stats: 22-37-59 in 61 GP

Position: C

Size: 5’9 155

Quick Analysis: Barkey to me is a good pick for Philly and I think he will be a solid bottom six forward after he finishes developing at the NHL level.

96 (VGK)

Player: Arttu Karki

Team: Tappara U20, U20 SM-Sarja

Stats: 13-26-39 in 36 GP

Position: LD

Size: 6’2 176

Quick Analysis: Kärki I think could be a really good pick here for Vegas as he has good size and scoring potential and I think in time this kid should be a solid 3rd pair defensemen for the Knights.

So that is all of the Analysis I am doing, there were definitely some quality picks in rounds 4 through 7 as well and I think that most of these selections were good and I wish all of the prospects taken the best of luck to hopefully make it to the NHL at some point in their careers.
