Seasons and Roster Preview: the Bruins were able to bring back Krejci after a year overseas and were able to keep Bergeron in the fold and while they also made a few minor tweaks this team is basically the same that didn’t make it out of the first round last year and with Marchand, McAvoy and Grzelyck out the first few months and this core aging yet another year this team will have a hard time making the playoffs this year as they keep on getting older and the Sens and Red Wings after this offseason look poised to maybe bump Boston down a slot.
So my roster predictions here are not too bad for the start of the year.
In Net I would once again have Ullmark and Swayman as the tandem of these two make up one of the better tandems in the NHL right now. Ullmark is coming off one of his better seasons as he played the most he has ever played in a season with 41 games and had a really good .917 SV% and should the NHL that he can be part of a NHL tandem and I would expect him to once again be a good goalie for Boston while Swayman had a breakout year as he played his first full NHL season and got a lot of wins for the Bruins even putting up a .914 SV% and didn’t look out of place in the playoffs so if you ask me he is the starter in a couple of years but for right now he will make up the other half of a really good tandem in Boston and I think it was smart not to touch the goaltending by Boston as this tandem is really good in my eyes and they make each other better and this should be the teams strong suit this year.
With the D-Corp starting without guys like Grzelyck who is a top 4 defensemen and McAvoy who is their top defensemen is a huge blow and while I think they will have a okay defence this year I am not sure if they will play alright in each and every game. To start I would have Hampus Lindholm who they acquired at least years trade deadline and extended and is their best left side defensemen play on the top pair with Brandon Carlo who would usually play on the 2nd pair but due to the McAvoy injury I would put him on the top pair with Lindholm, on the 2nd pair I would put Mike Reilly there as I think he is a good enough defensemen who plays more on the defensive side and might be a trade candidate once their blueline is healthy again so young his value isn’t such a bad thing and I would have Connor Clifton be his partner as Clifton is more of a third pair defensemen but has shown some offensive flashes and I think is their best option for the time being, then I would have Forbort who had a of event first year in Boston play on the third pair as he is mature and would make a great 3rd pair player and have him play with Zboril who has dealt with a ton of injuries and had a hard time staying in the NHL but I think this could be the year he proves he belongs in the NHL and starting him on the 3rd pair wouldn’t be a bad idea and then have someone like Carrick who has bounced around between the NHL and AHL recently be the spare defensemen is the best defence I can come up with for Boston and I think they would probably be okay once Grzelyck and McAvoy get back but until those two are healthy this defence has a lot of concerns in my eyes and having a 2nd pair that looks more like a 3rd pair isn’t too good and I am really worried about how this D-Corp will play to start the season.
As for the forward group they are missing a very offensive piece in Brad Marchand and their offense will hurt until he gets back but I am not as much worried about it as I am their defence and I think they could do a acceptable job until Marchand comes back. Now on the top line I would have Bergeron as their top line Center again as he has been the Bruins top Center for a while now and while I expect a little bit of regressing from him as he is a year older he is still a amazing 2-way forward and is one of the better Bruins players, and after he got placed on the top line last year Jake DeBrusk actually did quite well and showed that he can be a top 6 forward in the NHL so I would keep him one the top line but move him to his natural left side with Marchand out and then I my eyes the Bruins should put Fabian Lysell on the top line as they should incorporate some more youth into this team and Lysell is their best prospect in my eyes and he should gain experience playing with Bergeron early in the year and prove that he is ready for a top 9 spot right now and could be a real good addition to their offence, on their second line I would reunite a line from a few years ago that did really well and that is Hall on the left side as Hall is still a amazingly gifted top 6 winger and after his most productive season since 17-18 he should be able to still be a great playmaker, then have him with the two Czech’s in Krejci and Pastrnak as these two fellow countrymen ply very well together and with Krejci back I wouldn’t be surprised if Pastrnak scored 40 goals this year, Krejci put up a lot of points himself and this line becomes the main point producing line while Marchand is out, on the 3rd line I would have a few good players as newly acquired Pavel Zacha who is a really good middle six player should start the season on the wing with the Bruins having a pretty good Center depth but I think he could top last years 36 point season playing with Coyle who hasn’t lived up to that contract yet but could play quite well along side Zacha and Smith who I think will start the year with Boston on the 3rd line even though he didn’t have the best playoffs last year and he probably will be moved for cap reasons at some point in the season, and on the 4th line I would have Trent Frederic who I think would be a good fourth line bruiser for the Bruins and be able to play top nine minutes if there happens to be a injury with Jack Studnicka who I think will carve himself a role on the 4th line after not being able to make the team for too long last year and Tomas Nosek who is a good 4th line penalty killing forward and should help the two younger forwards grow and if any of those guys get injured then they would have a few players who could be called upon to play in Foligno and Steen who could be good bottom six forwards, and I think this offense should do just fine in Marchand’s absence and they may lose a game or two duo to not scoring enough but I think this offence should be good until Marchand comes back and it turns lethal again.
Rating C+: the Bruins have done a pretty okay job this offseason by getting Krejci back and swapping Zacha for Haula but I am really worried about their defence as it doesn’t look that good going into the year and it seems like it will be that way for the first few months and I think it could cost them a few games this year and I think that will force them to take a step back this year as I think that at least Ottawa if not Detroit should end up leapfrogging them early and I don’t think they will have enough to make it to the playoffs this year and it may be the start of a rebuild for Boston.

Season and Roster Preview: the Sabres did some really good things in the offseason and while they didn’t have many major additions or losses this year I do think that they replaced the players who ended up leaving quite well and this year is about integrating the young players such as Power and Quinn into the lineup so while I am not sure how close they would get to a playoff spot this year I do think that they will improve off of last year and this young team will take strides again.
In Net the Sabres have to pretty good goalies who will be sharing time this year and one goalie who will be waiting in the wings to become a consistent NHL goalie. So the Sabres have Craig Anderson who has played surprisingly well as a 40 year old veteran in the net and is coming off a surprisingly productive season last year getting into 31 games and put up a respectable .897 SV% last year and should be the 1A goalie in Buffalo this year and the Sabres were able to sign Eric Comrie in free agency to be the 1B and is coming off a pretty good year getting into 19 games with Winnipeg and got a .920 SV% which is quite good for his first full season in the NHL and I think this duo could surprise some people and be quite a good tandem this year and they have Pekka Luukkonen waiting in the wing as it seems he will start in the minors but if there is a injury he could come into the lineup and I think that starting next year he will play in the NHL but having these three goalies for this year is really good and this position should be a major strength for the Sabres next year.
With the D-Corp this is probably the youngest part of the team but will also be the most fun too watch as this really good young defence should take some major strides this year and should be able to improve from last year. On the top pair I would have the top pair from last year as I would have young defender Dahlin who is coming off a career year where he put up over 50 Points and should remain the Sabres top defender this year and he should remain with Jokiharju on the top line as I think those two played quite well after they were put together late last year and while he isn’t the most offensive player I so think he could be what Dahlin needs to be his offensive power house so I would keep these two on the top pair, on the second pair I would have top prospect and good rookie Owen Power man the left side as he showed last year in a late season stint that he didn’t look out of place at all and should be thrown into a bigger role and I think offseason acquisition Ilya Lyubushkin should be his partner as he played really well last year and was partners in Toronto with Morgan Reilly for most of his time their so I think he would be the perfect partner to mentor Power as well as be the safety guard for Power to unleash his offensive abilities, and on the 3rd pair I would have young defensemen Mattias Samuelsson who was able to get into 42 games last year and I would expect him to play his first full NHL season this year and I would probably pair him with Jacob Bryson as Bryson played his first full NHL season last season and while he didn’t put up too many points he was a good player and I think that he could thrive on the 3rd pair and then have Pilut who they brought back from Russia as the spare defensemen and put him in if there winds up being a injury but this defence looks quite good and I think that they will do a lot better then last year and take major strides especially with Dahlin and Power being the offensive defensemen they are.
As for their forward group they will have most of the Sam players from last year but should probably have a couple of rookies who could make the opening night roster. On the top line I would keep the offensive fire power line that was able to lead this offense last year as Skinner who had his best year since his first year in Buffalo should get over 40 points again and he should play with Thompson who broke out last year and proved he can be a top 6 forward by nearly breaking the 40 goal mark and should push 40 goals again this year and Tuch should also remain on the top line as he came into Buffalo and showed how much of a offensive beast he can be and should continue to help Thompson and Skinner produce on the top line, on the 2nd line I would have Peyton Krebs who came over in the Eichel trade last year and showed that he can be a middle six by getting 22 points in 48 games last year and I think he could hit 40-50 points this year and Cozens and Quinn should play with him as Cozens has been a very productive player in his first two seasons in the NHL and should be productive again and Quinn has yet to play in the NHL but the rookie had a amazing season in the AHL and I wouldn’t be surprised if he broke 30 points this year, on the 3rd line I would have power play specialist Victor Olofsson as he has been a okay point producer but hasn’t lived up to the contract and have him play with Mittlestadt who has had his career riddled with injuries but should still be a good middle 6 Center and John Jason Peterka who is another rookie who probably won’t have as good of numbers as Quinn but should be a pretty good player this year after his AHL season last year, and on the 4th line I would have two veterans in Okposo who is a decent bottom six Center who is on a bad contract and should be a good 4th liner and Girgensons who is a good veteran penalty killing forward and while he won’t score much he is a good bottom six forward and Rasmus Asplund who is a speedy winger and should help complete that 4th line and bring some offence to the line, and then have guys like Bjork and Hinostroza be the spares as those two could both play bottom six if there is a injury but I find a tough time for them to get into the lineup now, so I think that this offense will continue to grow as a team and after a good stepping stone season on offense last year I think that they will take another step and be a top 15 offensive team this year.
Rating B-: the Sabres did good this offseason by replacing Lyubushkin with Miller and swapping depth guys on defence and getting Comrie to replace Tokarski but most importantly allowing enough roster spots for guys like Power, Peterka and Quinn to have regular roster spots this year and should be able to compete much better this year with so many good young pieces this year and after a year where it seemed like the took a step in the right direction I say that take another and finish around the 500 mark so even though they probably don’t make the playoffs this year I do think it will be another good season.

Season and Roster preview: the Red Wings went into this offseason with a clear goal in mind and that was to regain their competitiveness as they lost that edge late last year and after a offseason of adding a few big name items like Copp, Kubalik, Perron, Chiarot, Maatta, and Husso this team looks ready to take some pretty big strides this year and after a collapse last year I think they will be way more competitive for longer this year but the question is can they improve enough to get back to the playoffs.
In Net the Red Wings were able to improve a huge amount as they go from having a young starter to having a really good tandem in net and it seems like goaltending will be better than last year. Now they still have Nedeljkovic from last year who had a pretty good first year in Detroit last year having played in 59 games last year and putting up a .901 SV% and I think that in a tandem situation like he had in the first full year in Carolina he can put up some pretty good numbers and would expect a better season from him then last year and I would have Husso be the other side of the tandem as he is coming off one amazing season as backup in St.Louis which was his first full NHL season and after the great play he had in St.Louis and the experience he gained in the playoffs I think he will have another good year and they have Sebastian Cossa who is the goalie of the future waiting in the wings and if they run into injury troubles giving him a taste of NHL action may not be such a bad thing so I think that the Red Wings are in a much better place with their goaltending and as long as they can stay healthy both goalies should excel in a tandem this year.
On the defensive side the really turned over the defence by bringing in good veteran guys like Maatta and Chiarot while letting guys like Dekeyser and Staal go and I think that team should have a more complete defensive situation this year. Now on the top pair I would keep Moritz Seider who was one of the best rookies last year and looks like he could be a top end defensemen in a year or two and should continue his amazing offensive abilities this year and I would put him with Chiarot this year as Chiarot was brought in to be his partner and while Chiarot can put up points he plays more on the defensive side and it is exactly what Seider needs in a partner, on the second pair I would have Filip Hronek who is still a very good defensemen coming off his best point total in a season and should build on that and I would have young rookie Simon Edvinsson be his pair as Edvinsson hasn’t played a NHL game but after a fantastic year over in the SHL it would be wrong not to give him a roster spot, and on the 3rd line I would have Maatta who they signed in the offseason and looks like he will fit well after a pretty decent year in LA and should help a young guy like Lindstrom who I think would be Maatta’s partner as he showed last year he can be a solid 3rd pair defensemen and then I would have Oesterle who is a proven 3rd pair defensemen be the spare and come in if there is any injuries and the Wings will have even more options once Pysyk and Walman are healthy again and I think this team looks a lot more talented and complete then last year and after the second half they had last year where their defence just seemed to shutdown, I think this will be a ton more competitive group and this team should be able to play better defence this year.
As for the forward group they have a lot of offensive weapons and I would be surprised if they ended up moving one but it seems like they could build off of last years pretty good offensive season. On the top line I would keep the unit that produced amazingly last season and that is the Bertuzzi, Larkin and Raymond line as Raymond burst onto the scene as a rookie and put up 57 points and if he continues his amazing play should get 60-70 points this year and with Larkin who is a amazing top line Center and in the final year of his contract will want to prove that he belongs as a top Center and after Bertuzzi was on pace tor almost 40 points last year it isn’t too far fetched that if he plays on the top line this year for a majority of the season he could be a 40 goal scorer on the top line, on the second line I would have Vrana who has produced as quite a high level since coming over from Washington but has been riddled with injuries so as long as he stay healthy he should play well and newly brought in Kubalik who is a former 30 goal talent and while he is coming off a down year with the right line mates he should be back to his 30 goal form and these two should be centered by Andrew Copp who the Red Wings signed to be their second line Center and coming off a very productive year in Winnipeg and New York R I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he had a career high playing with these two this year, on line 3 I would have another really good line as I would have Pius Suter who played top 6 minutes last year but with the additions is probably more of a 3rd line Center now and should be a productive bottom six Center at that paired with Perron who is coming off back to back season where he had above 55 points should produce even more in a lower role and Zadina who will be wanting to show the Red Wings that he can still be a productive top 9 forward after lots of trade speculation this year should make a lethal 3rd line and on the 4th line I would have 3 young players who could all play higher in the lineup if someone isn’t playing well or if there is a injury as I would have Rasmussen who has proven he is a good bottom six forward and is more of a 3rd liner play with Joe Veleno who had a good rookie year last season and seems like he is the future 3rd line Center of the team and Jonathan Berggren who hasn’t played in the NHL yet but is coming off a very productive year in the AHL and I think he should earn a spot on the 4th line this year and if there are any injuries then guys like Erne and Sundqvist who I would start as spares could come in and play 4th line minutes and this team looks way more deep and talented then they have in the past few years and after a year where they were 8th lowest in scoring last year I think we could see them take a big step this year.
Rating B+: the Red Wings have probably had one of the top three best offseason’s this year with so many key additions like Maatta and Chiarot on the defence, Kubalik, Perron and Copp on the forward group and Husso on the backend to replace guys like Dekeyser and Staal on the backend, Gagner and Stephens on the forward group and Griess in Net and this team looks poised to compete for a playoff spot this year and just like with New Jersey I think that they will be able to challenge for a playoff spot and take some big strides from last year but in a very competitive Confrence where the margin for error is minimal I think this Red Wing team will miss out but do a lot better then they did last year and get a lot closer to a playoff spot.

Season and Roster Preview: the Panthers are coming off a outstanding season last year winning the Presidents trophy but they have taken a step back this year in both offense and defence in the offseason and while I have no doubt that the Panthers will be able to make the playoffs again but I don’t think they will be anywhere close to their 122 point season from last year and I am really wondering how this team would for in the playoffs if they made it.
In Net the Panthers have a pretty good duo that will need to continue to grow if they are going to make some noise this year. The Panthers still have Bobrovsky even though they tried to move him this year but while no one wants that contract right now Bobrovsky keeps on improving each year he is with the Panthers as he started out horribly but had a pretty good year last season having a .913 SV% in 54 games last year and played pretty well in the playoffs to and if he can improve off of last years record I think Florida will be good and that isn’t even including Knight who they recently signed to a 3 year extension and had a pretty good year last season putting up a .908 SV% in 32 games and with a full season under his belt I expect him to grow even more and as much as this may surprise some people the Panthers goaltending might be the best position right now and I think their goaltending will save the Panthers in a few games this year.
On the D-Corp the loss of Weegar is going to hurt this team a lot and this D-Corp looks absolutely atrocious and I think very well could be the cause of them losing a few games this year. On the top pair they have two pretty good top 4 defensemen as I would have Aaron Ekblad who is the teams top defensemen and a pretty good point producer even though he has had injury troubles the past few years partnered with Forsling who played one the 2nd pair most of last year and is in my eyes a really underrated defensemen after he had 37 points last year which is 20 better then his previous career high and if he is playing top line minutes he will probably be able to get a new career high, on the second line I would have Montour who has been a very good 3rd line point producer since coming over a few years ago and I think he could be a top 4 defensemen and wouldn’t look out of place while I would place him with young defender Lucas Carlsson who hasn’t played much at the NHL level but should be able to show what he is made of if he is thrown into a top 4 spot, and on the 3rd pair I would have Gudas who is a really good physical defensemen and should be able to hold done a 3rd pair position partnered with Michael Del Zotto who has a really potent offensive game but a lacklustre defensive game so pairing him with Gudas will allow him to worry more on the offensive side while Gudas can worry about the defensive side and they would probably have veteran Marc Staal who can play on the 3rd pair and be a good veteran be the spare and come in if there happens to be a injury and I am really concerned about this defence as no Weegar or Chiarot will really hurt this team and with a 2nd pair that looks more like a 3rd pair I think this defence could easily cost the Panthers a few games this year and may be what keeps them from getting back to top spot in the Atlantic.
And with the forward group is does look a tad bit worse then the team that had the most goals scored last year but I think they will still be a good offensive team and they should help the team get out of trouble. So on the top line I would have newly acquired Matthew Tkachuk who the Panthers brought in and extended and is coming off his 1st 100 point season play on that top line and probably put up around 100 points again and be a good Huberdeau replacement play with Barkov who is the Panthers top line Center and if he played a full 82 game season this past year would’ve also hit 100 points and playing consistently with Tkachuk I think that he could hit 100 points this year and Carter Verhaeghe who is coming off a career year and was the Panthers best player in the playoffs and should continue to get new career highs year after year if he plays with Barkov again this year, on the 2nd line I would have Sam Bennett who has been a very productive 2nd line Center for the past year and a half for Florida should play with Reinhart who was over a point per game last year on the third line and should continue to improve with a bigger role this year and also have young Rookie Denisenko on the other wing as I think even though he has only played a few NHL games he has done enough in the AHL to show me that he is ready for the NHL and I think playing with Reinhart and Bennett will help Denisenko be productive off the get go, on the third line I would have Lundell who had a major rookie year and looks like he will be a huge piece of the Panthers lineup going forward and should continue to grow this year play with newly brought in Nick Cousins and Colin White as I think that if White can stay healthy and play consistently he should be able to play on the third line and be a very consistent point producing forward and Cousins isn’t the most offensive of players but he should be able to help the Panthers with the depth scoring and then on the 4th line have good 4th line center Luostarinen play down the middle as he has played that role well and should continue to do so with good depth winger Lomberg who has come up clutch before and should be able to be relied on to do so again and Patric Hornqvist who isn’t living up to his contract right now but is still a good net front presence and should continue to be a menace in front of the net and if they run unto injuries they could bring in spare forwards like Balcers and Heponiemi who could play bottom six roles if there is injuries and I think that the Panthers will get a bit better once Duclair is healthy again but I do think this offence should still be a good offensive this year but just not be a elite unit like they were last year.
Rating D: the Panthers didn’t do well this offseason because although just like the Rangers they were not able to improve their pre trade deadline team and I think they will take a step back this year and although I don’t think they will take a step out of the playoffs I do think they won’t be top of the division anymore I do believe they will be able to make the playoffs but will be on the back of their offence and goaltending cause I think their defence will be their real downfall this year.
