Two big Ottawa trades involving goalies

Two trade that have involved Senators goalies have gone down over the past two days and here is my opinion of the deals

Ottawa                                        Toronto

Future Considerations                    Matt Murray (25% retained)

                                                                    2023 3RD (OTT)

                                                                    2024 7RD (OTT)

Analysis: after lots and lots of discussion that lead up to this, the 15th player on my trade board is moved as Matt Murray at 25% retained as well as a 3RD pick next year and a 7RD pick in 2 years were moved by Ottawa to Toronto for future considerations. Now for the Senators this is a brilliant deal as they were able to offload the bad Murray contract for very little as they do have $1.5 Million on the books for the next two years but getting out of most of that of that contract for only a 3RD and 7TH round pick is a major win for Ottawa. For the Maple Leafs this is a bit of a confusing move as they didn’t want Campbell as $5 Million but they will take injury prone Matt Murray at $4.68 Million, now I think whether he is the 1A or 1B next year for Toronto as long as he can stay healthy I think he can be the goalie the Maple Leafs need but he does have a injury history and there is definitely a lot of risk, but also getting a 3RD and 7RD pick is nice given they don’t have much draft capital, so I see this as a win for the Sens but depending on how Murray plays it could wind up being a win for Toronto.

 Ottawa                                         Minnesota

Cam Talbot                                          Filip Gustavsson

Analysis: and with this new found cap space the Senators went out and acquired the number 24 player on my trade board on Cam Talbot from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for young goalie Filip Gustavsson. Now this trade signals to me that the Senators are in win now mode as Talbot is entering the final year of his contract at a $3.66 Million dollar cap hit and after the Fleury signing Talbot grew a bit upset with maybe losing the starting job again, so he ends up going to Ottawa where I think he can be the 1A in Ottawa in a tandem with Forsberg and he should get more playing time in Ottawa then he probably would in Minnesota so it is a win for both the player and team. As for Gustavsson he is a good young goalie with good upside and after having a play year last year bouncing around Ottawa’s lineup he can probably be a good bet to be the backup in Minnesota this year and should be a good backup for a few years and this move saves the Wild almost $3 Million in cap space so they probably wont have to move anyone else out for the time being. So I would think that in the short term Ottawa is the winner as they get a starter level goalie for the next year but it could be Minnesota in the long term depending on how Gustavsson plays.
