For today’s news and rumours there are a couple coaching hires and and signings I will talk about and get ready cause we are about to see a flurry of movement over the next few days and I will be keeping up as best I can with the last news and rumours that happen as well as the draft.
Here is some coaching news
The coaching carrousel is coming to a close as the Winnipeg Jets have their new head coach
After letting go Dave Lowry as interim head coach after the season and being linked to Barry Trotz for the longest time before Trotz said he wouldn’t coach anymore, the Jets have finally got their new head coach and it is former Dallas Stars head coach Rick Bowness who becomes the next bench boss in Winnipeg.
Bowness is one of the oldest head coaches in the NHL and is back in Winnipeg to coach as he started being a head coach in the original Jets originationthat relocated to Arizona and has also worked as the head coach of Boston, Ottawa, NYI and Arizona before he was head coach of Dallas most recently where he lead the Stars too 2 playoff appearances as a Stanley Cup Final as interim.
Bowness has had a really good defensive team in Dallas and that is where the Jets need the most help as they could get a lot better defensively and I think the offensive talent is a bit better in Winnipeg then in Dallas although there are a lot of similarities but I think that the more experienced Jets team could be good offensively and with Hellebuyck still a star in net I would expect the Jets to do good under Bowness.
He signed a 2 year deal at $2.5 Million now and I think that is good for both the player and team as Bowness left Dallas because he wanted a short term deal and the Jets don’t have to commit too much money or term on the head coach position so definitely a good deal for both sides and I would expect better production out of Winnipeg with Bowness then they had this past year.
It seems that the last GM is now hired and one last head coaching Job has opened up as the Sharks have fires their head coach and named their new GM.
In a really surprising move the San Jose Sharks have fired head coach Bob Boughner and his assistant coaches just a few days ago. Boughner had 1 year left on his deal at $1.5 Million and while they had played better this year then last year they still missed the playoffs and while I don’t think Boughner has done a terrible job in San Jose I think like May other people that the only reason the Sharks fires the coaching staff was to let their new GM bring his own guys in and the Sharks announced today that Mike Grier will be the new head coach as he is a former player who knows the game well and will make a excellent GM in my opinion and he also happens to be the first Black GM in NHL history which I think is fantastic and I want to congratulate him on being hired and I think he will do great things for San Jose but one of those first things that he will have to do is hire the next head coach of the San Jose Sharks.
And here is a list of all signings for the NHL from JUN 30th to JUL 5th

Los Angeles
Right side defensemen Frederic Allard and the Los Angeles Kings have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and the contract will begin next season. Allard wasn’t doing to great in the Preds farm team and was shipped to LA before the deadline and actually had 10 points in 15 games in Ontario of the AHL and I think that play got him a contract extension but while I would think he gets a bigger role next year I still think he stays in the AHL.

Vancouver
Right Winger Brock Boeser and the Vancouver Canucks have come to terms on a 3 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $6.65 Million dollars and the deal will begin next season. Boeser was the focal point of a trade rumours this year and last about how the Canucks could clear cap space because they didn’t want to sign him to his $7.5 Million dollar qualifying offer, and they were surprisingly able to convince him to bring down his AAV to around $6.5 Million and in return this contract will lead Boeser straight to free agency but this is a good compromise and I think he will continue to fit nicely in the Canucks top 6 next year.
Right Winger William Lockwood and the Vancouver Canucks have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will have a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars and the deal will start next season. Lockwood had another good AHL season putting up 25 points and also got into some NHL action getting no points in 13 games but I think that with his foot play over the past few years that he will get a shot to play on the Canucks 4th line this upcoming year.
Left side defensemen Jack Rathbone and the Vancouver Canucks have come to terms on a 2 year contract extension that will have a AAV of $.850 Thousand dollars per year and the contract will begin next year. Rathbone has been in the AHL for the past couple of years dur to Vancouver’s depth but with them moving out players to get cap it seems that Rathbone is finally ready for a NHL role as he is coming off a year where he had 40 points in 39 AHL games and I think he will get to play on the 3rd pair for Vancouver.
Right side defensemen Noah Juulsen and the Vancouver Canucks have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars and the deal will begin next year. Juulsen played at both levels last year getting 2 assists in 8 NHL games and getting 16 points in 50 AHL games and while he is definitely a call up option for in the season if there is a injury I would think that he plays a majority of next year in the AHL.
Central
Colorado
Left Winger Andrew Cogliano and the Colorado Avalanche have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $1.25 Million and the deal will begin next year. Cogliano helped the Avalanche become Stanley Cup Champions and with the amount of depth pieces the Avalanche could be losing this year he can still play a decent 4th line role and still help the Avalanche and be productive.
Atlantic
Boston
Goaltender Kyle Keyser and the Boston Bruins have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars and the deal will begin next year. Keyser has spilt time between the AHL and ECHL over the past few years and actually had a pretty good showing in the AHL this year and it was enough to get a contract extension and I think he will play in the AHL next year as either the 3rd or 4th string goalie.
Left Side Defensemen Nick Wolff and the Boston Bruins have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will have a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars and the deal will begin next year. Wolff played 32 AHL games this year putting up 8 assists and while I wouldn’t say he doesn’t have a NHL future I do believe he plays in the AHL again next year.
Florida
Center Aleksi Heponiemi and the Florida Panthers have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will have a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars and the deal will kick in next year. Heponiemi still has a NHL future in my opinion as he got into 6 games of NHL action this year and had 39 points in 56 AHL games and while I think he would start at the AHL level I wouldn’t be surprised if he was able to get a 4th line role by the end of the season.
Tampa Bay
Center, Left Winger Nick Paul and the Tampa Bay Lightning have agreed to a 7 year contract extension that will have a AAV of $3.15 Million and the deal will kick in next year. Paul has been a great addition in Tampa as he helped them to the Cup Final this year and had 14 points in 21 regular season games with them and 9 points in 23 playoff games and while he can play in the top six I think he worked really well on the 3rd line and will probably be on that line next year.
Metro
Columbus
Right Winger Carson Meyer and the Columbus Blue Jackets have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that has a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin next year. Meyer has had consecutive good years in the AHL and put up 27 points in 57 games last year and got his first taste of NHL action as he had a goal and 3 points in 13 NHL games and he does look like a future NHL player and while I wouldn’t be surprised if he was able to get a 4th line spot next year I do believe he will start in the minors.
Center Joshua Dunne and the Columbus Blue Jackets have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will have a AAV of $.874 Thousand dollars per year and the contract will begin next season. Dunne has hit 21 points in 44 AHL games over the past two years after coming over from the NCAA and has 6 games of NHL experience he had 2 years ago but with Columbus depth right now I think he will be in the AHL next year.
New York R
Right Winger Julien Gauthier and the New York Rangers have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that has a AAV of $.800 Thousand and the deal will begin next season. Gauthier has been in and out of the Rangers lineup the last few years and only played in 49 games this year where he had 3 goals and 7 points and he has asked to be moved out of NYR and the reason he signed the contract with the Rangers is that it would help facilitate a trade.
Pittsburgh
Goaltender Casey DeSmith ans the Pittsburgh Penguins have come to terms on a 2 year contract extension that will have a AAV of $1.8 Million and the deal will begin next season. DeSmith has been the Penguins backup for a few years now and while he has put up okay numbers including a 2.79 GAA and .914 SV% in 26GP last year but is inconsistent at times and while I believe they signed him to be the backup next year I really thought they would have gone in a different direction and not brought him back.
