Updates on Philly And Vegas coaching situation, a trade, and some more rumours including about Gibson and DeBrincat
For today’s news and rumours I have my opinion about a Vegas-Montreal, how I think Vegas and Philly did on their new coaches, as well as a few rumours including the Hawks looking to move Alex DeBrincat.
#1) DeBrincat and Dach are both available from Chicago
After a horrible season the Hawks seem to be starting a full rebuild and some really interesting names could be dealt this offseason. The Hawks are reportedly considering trading anyone without a NMC as those players wouldn’t need to be approached for a trade and yes, that does include young stars DeBrincat and Dach. Now for DeBrincat his value in a trade would be through the roof as he is a two time 40 goal scorer including last year and has hit 75 points in those two seasons and given he is only 24 years old he could still improve on those numbers. Now the reason for the Hawks trying to trade him would seem due to the fact that Hawks think that when they are ready to compete in 3-5 years, DeBrincat would be 27-29 years old and might have already hit his peak so moving him now would make sense and he is due a qualifying offer of $9 Million dollars next year and for a rebuilding team to be giving out a huge contract doesn’t really make sense so I could see a move for DeBrincat all lot more then in the last few weeks. And it seems that the asking price is unbelievably huge as recent report say’s the asking price is multiple high draft picks, multiple prospects, and a young player or two so if a DeBrincat trade goes down you can expect it to be a blockbuster, the likes we have not seen for a while. As for Dach a trade would be far less substantial then a DeBrincat trade but no less impactful. Dach is a good top 6 Center with a big body and can be very physical but he hasn’t surpassed 26 points in a season yet and for a 3rd overall pick he hasn’t lived up to expectations. Now I would expect that because he is 20 he is less likely to be traded but a fresh start may be in order as the Blackhawks could get at least a prospect, young player and high draft pick in a trade for Dach so while I think that it is no guarantee that he is moved, a deal would definitely bring Chicago a good package.
#2) Gibson might be looking for a trade out of Anaheim
Gibson might be looking to get out of Anaheim as there were some reports that he had requested a trade from Anaheim. Now since those reports have been mentioned, Gibson has come out and denied those rumours but one might think that there might be some truth to those original rumours. Gibson is a elite goalie and has been outstanding for the Ducks but recently his play has been below his average and he was reportedly unhappy with the fact that the Ducks traded all of those pending UFA’s at the deadline and my gut says the Gibson situation will depend on how the offseason goes. If the Ducks sign a couple players and look like they will try to do a quick retool then Gibson would probably stay, but if the Ducks do what most people think and start making moves to go toward a rebuild then I can’t see Gibson staying and could easily see him at that point asking for a trade, but this situation is definitely worth keeping a eye on over the next few weeks.
#3) Montreal’s Josh Anderson getting trade interest
The Canadiens are talking to teams about multiple moves following the Weber trade with Vegas and it seems like a player who is getting a ton of attention is veteran winger Josh Anderson. Anderson has been a good fit in Montreal as he put up 32 points last year which was his 2nd in Montreal and seems to be a really good middle 6 forward who has a physical element that a lot of teams seem to want. Now he has 5 years left on his current contract at a pretty high cap hit of $5.5 million dollars per year and a lot of teams are interested even though he signed long term at that cap hit. Now I would say that unless a knock your socks off deal were to be presented to Montreal, then Montreal wouldn’t trade Anderson cause I think he is one of the veteran players that the Canadiens could use in their rebuild and he has meshed well in Montreal (especially with some of the younger players), and I think he can help lead Montreal back to the playoffs in a few years.
Vegas signs their head coach.
The Golden Knights have officially got their next head coach as they signed former Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy to a 5 year deal that has a AAV of $4.5 per year. Now I think that this signing is a masterful one by Vegas as not only was Cassidy the best coach available for the Golden Knights but I feel that he was the best fit for the Knights. He has experience with leading Veteran teams to make the playoffs and Vegas is more of a veteran team and I think the similarities between Boston and Vegas are really close. When Cassidy coached Boston he had a great starter in Rask (until last year), A D-Corp that could defend really well and a solid offensive group lead by one line that was a powerhouse for the team. Now I think that Lehner is a clear cut starter in Vegas, the Knights D-Corp has shown how good defensively they can be over the last few years and if Eichel Pacioretty and Stone are all healthy on the top line then they could by somewhat similar to the perfection line, and I also think that Vegas has a deeper offense and more talent on the D-Corp so this is a great place to go for Cassidy. I think that giving a coach a 5 year deal is a little much as I would have given him a 4 year deal but I think the $4.5 Million dollars per year is a absolute steal for what he brings and I believe that Cassidy will lead the Golden Knights back to the playoffs next year and beyond.
Philadelphia has also signed their head coach.
Another coach has signed as the Flyers have their new bench boss in former Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella who has signed a 4 year deal with a AAV of $4 Million per year. Now this deal doesn’t come as much surprise to me as I actually predicted it a few days ago but I really believe this will be a good hire from Philadelphia. Torts is the voice needed in that Flyer locker room as he is a guy who will get the most out of all the players on his team night in night out. And another thing to consider with Torts is that most of his teams are really good defensively and the Flyers have been atrocious when it comes to defence so if he can help the Flyers defensively then that would be a huge win. I am surprised they were willing to go four years with Torts as even though he is a good fight I probably would’ve only given him 3 years and probably around $3.5 Million instead of 4 but nevertheless I feel that the Flyers made the right choice in their new head coach and I think Philly will improve much under Torts.
Trade Alert
Montreal Vegas
Evgeni Dadonov Shea Weber
Analysis: for the 2nd time in a week we have a trade to talk about and this one is a doozy as it involves injured Habs Captain Shea Weber. So the full details of the trade are that the Canadiens are shipping injured Captain Shea Weber and his 4 year $7.86 Million dollar cap hit to the Golden Knights for Evgeni Dadonov who has 1 year left on his deal at $5 Million dollars. Now for Montreal this deal is perfect as Weber is a LTIR contract as his career is likely over and they offload it to get out of LTIR space which is a win in itself and on top of not giving up a extra asset which is great they get Dadonov. Dadonov is still a pretty good player after having 20 goals and 43 points with Vegas last year and I think he can Definitely for in their middle six next year and would be another veteran the Canadiens could offload either later in the offseason or at the trade deadline and could retain money to get a even better return but I think it’s safe to say the Canadiens are thrilled with this deal. As for the Golden Knights they get Weber who had multiple injuries after the Stanley cup final last year and his career is most likely over so they can place him on LTIR for the duration of his contract and while they would be technically over the cap, with placing him on LTIR it will save the cap and help them sign some of their players. And it also lets them get rid of Dadonov who was not a bad player but a definite cap casualty as the Knights couldn’t make his $5 Million dollar cap hit work and after the failed trade to Anaheim before the deadline due to Dadonov partial NMC, they are now finally able to get rid of him. As for the results I think that the Canadiens won the trade as not only do they get out of LTIR space but also get a tradable asset in Dadonov that could bring even more things, and while I don’t think the Knights won this trade they were still able to move Dadonov and even though they will have to work in LTIR space for the foreseeable future it gives them the cap flexibility that this team desperately needed.
And here is a list of all signings for the NHL from JUN 13th to JUN 16th
Pacific
Edmonton
Center, Left Winger Brad Malone ans the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to a 2 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.763 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Malone started this year in the AHL but was able to get a NHL contract and had 2 points in 8 games at the NHL level and while I could see him being in contention for a 4th line role next year I would suspect that he at least starts in the AHL.
Los Angeles
Center T.J Tynan and the Los Angeles Kings have come to terms on a 2 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.788 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will kick in the 22-23 season. Tynan had 2 games of NHL play with LA this year and his first NHL games since the 19-20 season but his play in the AHL was jaw dropping as he put up 98 points in 62 games and showed that he can still play, and with LA having a very deep roster I don’t see him being a regular NHL player but I would count on him as being a likely call up option.
Left Defensemen Jacob Moverare and the Los Angeles Kings have come to terms on a 2 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.763 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Moverare had his first taste of NHL action this year as he got into 19 games this season and had 2 assists in those games but that was only due to the fact that they had a lot of injuries and I would say that he likely plays in the AHL again and could be a call up option for LA.
Vancouver
Right Defensemen Filip Johansson who was a 1RD pick of the Minnesota Wild in the 2018 draft signed his 2 year entry level contract with the Canucks that will carry a AAV of $.884 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23. Johansson was not qualified by the Wild and the Wild’s loss is the Canucks gain. I think he could eventually be a NHL player but for now I believe he will go back to the SHL for next year.
Central
Colorado
Forward Lukas Sedlak is making a comeback to the NHL as he has signed a 1 year deal with the Colorado Avalanche that will carry a AAV of $.800 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Sedlak had played in 162 NHL games before he left to go to the KHL in the last three years and now makes his NHL return. I would guess that he is either in the AHL or maybe could be a 4th line player for the Avalanche next year.
Dallas
Center Frederik Karlstrom ans the Dallas Stars have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Karlstrom had a assist in his first 3 NHL games this year and also had pretty good AHL production with 29 points in 65 games and I believe that he will probably start in the AHL but might be able to play on the fourth line next year.
Winger Nicolas Caamano ans the Dallas Stars have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will start in the 22-23 season. Caamano didn’t play at all in the NHL this year but does have 36 NHL games under his belt with 1 goal and 3 points in those games, and while I wouldn’t expect him to be a regular NHL player next year I could see him be one of the first call-ups for Dallas if there is a injury.
Nashville
Defender Jeremy Lauzon and the Nashville Predators have worked out a contract extension for 4 years that will carry a AAV of $2 Million dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Lauzon is a perfect third line defensemen and was acquired at the deadline from Seattle, but I think that the Predators signed him to a nice deal, I know I would’ve given him a 3 year deal instead of four but for a solid 3rd pair D-Men I think this is good value.
Atlantic
Buffalo
Winger Filip Cederqvist who was a 5RD pick in 2019 by the Buffalo Sabres signes his 2 year entry level contract with the Sabres and it will have a AAV of $.850 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Cederqvist had a few good years now and especially last year in the SHL but I would believe that while he could become a NHL player at some point in his career, I believe he will go back to the SHL for next year.
Detroit
Goaltender Jussi Olkinuora who was a undrafted free agent signed a 1 year deal with the Detroit Red Wings and the deal will carry a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Olkinuora is not very young at Agee 31 but did have a pretty good year in the KHL last year getting a .917 SV% in 36 games and while the Red Wings have a open spot at backup, I think he plays in the AHL as a 3rd or 4th string goalie.
Florida
Left Winger Anton Levtchi who was a undrafted free agent signed a 1 year entry level contract with the Florida Panthers that will have a AAV of $.843 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will kick in the 22-23 season. Levtchi’s play over in Liiga was outstanding and obviously got the Panthers attention to sign him but I don’t believe he is ready for the NHL yet and would guess that he’s back in Liiga or the AHL next year.
Montreal
Defender Otto Leskinen and the Montreal Canadiens have agreed to terms on a 1 year contract that will carry a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Leskinen played overseas in Liiga last year after his contract with Montreal expired in which he only played in 6 NHL games having no points, and with a crowded Montreal blueline I don’t see him being a regular at the NHL level but could see him be a strong call up candidate.
Ottawa
Center Dylan Gambrell and the Ottawa Senators have come to terms on a 1 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.950 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Gambrell has a decent year putting up 7 points in 63 games and while this isn’t a real solid impact player I do believe he can play as the 4th line Center for the Sens next year.
Tampa Bay
Defensemen Sean Day and the Tampa Bay Lightning have agreed to a 1 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Day had a great year in the AHL this season putting up 40 points in 63 games and while I think he could eventually be a NHL Defensemen I do think that he will play in the AHL next year.
Metro
Columbus
Goaltender Danill Tarasov ans the Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to a 3 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $1.05 Million dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Tarasov is a really good goalie and I thought did while in the few NHL games he played this year putting up a .937 SV% in 4 games, and while I think he is still the 3rd stringer with Korpisalo being the backup this year, I strongly believe that Tarasov will challenge for the backup role next year.
New York R
Right Winger Sammy Blais and the New York Rangers 1 year contract extension that will carry a AAV of $1.525 Million dollars per year and will begin in the 22-23 season. This deal will lead Blais to UFA next year and I think he can be a effective bottom 6 forward in NYR next year and while he might want a more prominent role I think that he would do good in the bottom 6 for NYR.
