Campbell not returning and a big Devils-Canucks trade rumour

For today’s trade rumours I discuss the recent Rumors of a huge Vancouver New Jersey trade and the fact that Campbell might not be with Toronto next year, as well as the fact that the Sabres are going to go hard after a top 4 D-Men in my opinion.

#1) A huge New Jersey and Vancouver trade in the works.

Over the past few days and weeks it has seemed like the Canucks are going to trade Miller and try to reap the benefits of the amazing production Miller has put up over the past few years and recently the Devils have appeared as a likely trade partner for Vancouver. Now the Devils have stated that they are willing to move the 2nd overall pick to get a impact player and Miller would fit that bill in my opinion as Miller had a astounding 99 points this past year and his future in Vancouver is heavily up in the air. Now Miller will command a high price if he is traded and I think it would have to be more then just the 2nd overall pick but given that during the draft combine it sounded like the Canucks were asking Slafkovsky if he can play Center at the NHL level and he is projected to go 2nd or 3rd in the draft so for a team who drafts 15th overall it was just a bit weird unless they are trying to get the 2nd overall pick. Now if I had to guess a trade proposal for these teams it would have to be the 15th overall pick currently belonging to Vancouver and J.T Miller but not on his current contract as I think he would have to agree to a contract extension or it doesn’t really make any sense for Jersey to trade for him, a contract extension in my opinion would be for between 4-6 years at a cap hit of somewhere between $8-9 Million per year. So those two assets going to New Jersey for the 2nd overall pick where they can presumably draft Slafkovsky, I would say that RFA Pavel Zacha is also included as the Canucks did have interest earlier in the year and he is a RFA, I would also have to include a young defender and in my opinion that would be Shakir Mukhamadullin who is a recent first round pick and still slated to be a top 4 defensemen and a 2RD pick in next years draft and if both teams are willing to do this then I see it as a win for both sides.

My Prediction

To Vancouver

2ND overall pick (NJ)

Pavel Zacha RFA

Shakir Mukhamadullin

2023 2RD pick (NJ)

To New Jersey

15th overall pick (VAN)

J.T Miller (extension of 4-6 years at a cap hit of between $8-9 Million per year)

#2) Buffalo to go hard after a right handed defensemen this offseason.

The Sabres are looking to take major strides this year and be a good team and maybe even challenge for a playoff spot and I think that one of the biggest priorities for next year will be to acquire a top four defensemen who can play on the right side as a pair for Power. Now recent 1st overall selection Owen Power will play in his rookie year next season and the Sabres want to get him a partner who is probably more defensive minded to help Power reach his full potential in the NHL. Now three guys who I think they could trade for would be Damon Severson in New Jersey, Matt Dumba in Minnesota or Filip Hronek in Detroit as probably the best fits via trade and I do think that these would cost a lot to trade for but it would be worth it, or if they are looking for a more cheaper option then maybe Shattenkirk form Anaheim or Sean Walker from LA as they can play top 4 roles okay and aren’t going to be expensive like the other three and I believe that if they go the trade route that their best assets would be the Panthers 1st round pick which is 28th overall and they will have already picked twice so I could see them moving 1 first round pick for a much needed defensemen, or Victor Olofsson who I have said might benefit from a fresh start and even though his qualifying offer is a little rich I do feel that he still has value as a top 9 forward who is a power play specialist. Now if they were to add someone via free agency the three names that come to mind would be Justin Schultz, Josh Manson and P.K Subban as all three don’t usually put up much points and would work in my opinion with Power and maybe throw Ethan Bear into that mix if he isn’t qualified by Carolina but no matter who it is and which direction they go, I believe one way or another the Sabres will get a power partner this offseason.

#3) Campbell not returning to Toronto.

The Maple Leafs had a amazing season and almost broke the playoff slump they are in right now but once again lost so there will be some changes and could one major change happen in the net this season. The Maple Leafs and Jack Campbell who had been the starter for the last few years sound like they are both very much apart in contract talks as it sounds like the Maple Leafs are willing to give him around $2-3 Million on a new deal while Campbell seems to be looking around the $5 Million dollar range. Now I know when I did my offseason preview for Toronto that I though the Maple Leafs would give him what he wants and get a deal done for somewhere around 5 years at $5 Million per year but right now at least it sounds like the Maple Leafs are reluctant to give that to him. Now I still think that it will take somewhere around $5 Million to get Campbell to sign there and I still think he is the best goalie for Toronto but I think both team and player would have other options. For Toronto if they don’t bring him back then there is a lot of speculation that they would trade for Gibson. Gibson has 5 years at $6.4 Million dollars and I would think that there would have to be some salary retained but I do think that Gibson would be one of the best replacement for Campbell and while I still think Campbell fits best with Toronto I wouldn’t be surprised if the Leafs tried to make that sort of deal. As for Campbell I think that Minnesota, Edmonton and Washington would be in the same boat as Toronto where they want him but don’t have the money to sign him to a $5 Million dollar contract, teams like Arizona, Chicago and Anaheim would be able to give him the money he wants but given they are all in recently started rebuilds it doesn’t make sense for them, so the three teams I could see go after Campbell in free agency and give him his money would be Buffalo, New Jersey and Colorado as I think all could benefit from a true number 1 goalie and all I could see trying to make the playoffs in the next 2 years so while I think that Toronto will still sign him it doesn’t seem a guarantee that he will be back like I thought earlier.

And here is a list of all signings for the NHL from MAY 24th to JUN 2nd.

Pacific

Anaheim

Left Winger Pavel Regenda who was a undrafted free agent signed a 2 year entry level contract with the Anaheim Ducks that caries a AAV of $.855 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will kick in the 22-23 season. He had a real breakout year in the Slovak Extraliga this season and while I don’t see him in the NHL right now maybe he could eventually and I would expect him to play in the AHL this season.

San Jose

Right Defender Gannon Laroque who was a 4RD pick in the 2021 draft by the San Jose Sharks signed his 3 year entry level contract with the Sharks and it caries a AAV of $.868 Thousand dollars per year and will kick in the 22-23 season. Laroque had a great WHL season this season and even got into some AHL action having a assist in 3 games and while I think he could be a NHL player in a few years I would say that he plays in the AHL next year.

Vancouver

Center Linus Karlsson who was a 3RD pick in 2018 of the San Jose Sharks signes his 2 year entry level contract worth it’s the Canucks that caries a AAV of $.884 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. He was acquired by Vancouver in a deal for Dahlen a few seasons ago and had a breakout year this season having 46 points in 52 games in the SHL and I think that he will start in the AHL next year but if he plays at that high level again next season I think he could be a NHL forward before next year is over.

Central

Arizona

Defender Ronald Knot who was a undrafted free agent signed a 1 year contract with the Arizona Coyotes  that caries a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will kick in the 22-23 season. He had played a good couple of years in Czechia and the KHL and I think while he could be considered for a bottom 6 role with Arizona next year I would suspect he plays in the AHL.

Goalie Ivan Prosvetov ans the Arizona Coyotes have agreed to a 1 year contract extension that will career a $.750 Thousand dollar cap hit over the next year at the NHL level and the deal will kick in the 22-23 season. Prosvetov has a decent season in the AHL and with Arizona’s backup position murky for next year I do think he could possibly be a NHL backup next year but the more likely scenario is he is the Coyotes 3rd string goalie next year.

St.Louis

Left Defender Calle Rosen and the St.Louis Blues have come to terms on a 2 year contract extension that will career a $.763 Thousand dollar cap hit and the deal will begin in the 22-23 season. Rosen played decently in the AHL but when he was called upon at the NHL level he made his opportunity count having 7 points in 18 regular season games and was able to get into 9 postseason games due to injuries. I would believe that he doesn’t start as a NHL player next year but will be called up if something happens to their D-Corp.

Winnipeg

Right Defender Tyrel Bauer who was a 6RD pick in the 2020 draft by the Winnipeg Jets signed his 3 year entry level contract with the Jets and it caries a AAV of $.850 Thousand dollars per year and will kick in the 22-23 season. Bauer has a decent season in the WHL this year but given how recently he was drafted and the Jets depth at defence I suspect he goes back to the WHL next year.

Atlantic

Boston

Left Wing, Center Joona Koppanen who was a 5RD pick in the 2016 draft by the Boston Bruins signed his 1 year entry level contract with the Bruins  and it caries a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and will kick in the 22-23 season. He had a good year in the AHL on a AHL contract with providence putting up 30 points in 62 games and I would believe that he will be back in the AHL next year.

Buffalo

Right Winger Isak Rosen who was a 1RD pick in the 2021 draft by the Buffalo Sabres signed his 3 year entry level contract with the Sabres and it caries a AAV of $.925 Thousand dollars per year and will kick in the 22-23 season. Rosen had a pretty good year over in Sweden and I would believe that he gets a chance to start in the AHL next year but if he can still play at a very high level then I don’t think it would take long for him to become a NHL forward.

Metro

Columbus

Right Winger Marcus Bjork who was a undrafted free agent signed a 1 year entry level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets that caries a AAV of $.925 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will kick in the 22-23 season. He has had a decent few seasons in the SHL and I would suspect he probably goes back to the SHL or maybe the AHL next year.

Joona Luoto and the Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to a 1 year contract that caries a AAV of $.750 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will kick in the 22-23 season. He has previous experience in the NHL and AHL as he played a few NHL games 3 years ago but had his contract terminated last year before the season began and I think he would begin in the AHL and if he plays  well enough then he comes up and plays in the NHL especially if there are injuries.

New York I

Center Ruslan Iskhakov who was a 2RD pick in 2018 by the New York Islanders signed his 2 year entry level contract with the Islanders that caries a AAV of $.855 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will kick in the 22-23 season. Iskhakov had a really good first year in the DEL last year and I suspect he will god to the AHL next year.

Pittsburgh

Right Defender Taylor Fedun and the Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to a 2 year contract extension that caries a AAV of $.763 Thousand dollars per year and the deal will kick in the 22-23 seasons. Fed un played the entire season in the minors and had a decent season in the AHL and I would suspect he remains in the AHL next year but could be a call up if there is injuries.
