Back with the trade rumours again and here are 3 things that I want to discuss.
The Wild are having a beautiful season right now as they are at 103 points and are tied for 2nd in the Central and I believe have a shot to make a deep run in the playoffs this season but they have a impending cap crunch coming up this offseason with the money from the Parise and Suter buyouts, and with the cap crunch coming can they really handle signing Fiala with the way he is playing right now. Fiala is having a career year this year putting up 30 goals and 75 points in 76 games and after a shaky start, he was placed with rookie Boldy and sparks have flown ever since but he is slowly pricing himself out of Minnesota. The Wild only have $8.2 Million dollars in cap space next year and on top of Fiala, they also have to sign RFA Middleton and don’t have a backup goalie for next year so making Fiala fit would be difficult. Now the only guy who makes sense to move to free up the cap space would be Dumba. While Spurgeon and Brodin are signed at high cap hits, the length of their contracts make them immovable, they could move Talbot but would only do that if they can sign Fleury and the cap would probably cancel each other out, and while Zuccarello is a lot of money I don’t believe they should break up that duo with Kaprizov. So with Dumba having 1 year left at $6 Million dollars and not having a guarantee that he signs before becoming a UFA and with Calen Addison primed for a bigger role then it might make Dumba becomes expendable. Fiala I think would be willing to sign a contract with a major raise on his salary right now, as he is currently on a 1 year deal at $5.1 and I think with the play of Fiala this year he could ask for a 4-5 year deal worth somewhere between $7 and $8 Million so as much as moving Dumba would help them and it honestly in my opinion could come down to choosing between Dumba and Fiala I think they could need to move even more to sign Fiala like maybe Marcus Foligno or Alex Goligoski and if you have to move so much to sign Fiala I don’t see why they would do that so I would predict they move Fiala for a substantial package and they try to work their forward group next year without Fiala.
The Flames are currently going to have a lot of trouble to sign extensions to guys like Matthew Tkachuk, Johnny Gaudreau and Andrew Mangiapane but they don’t have enough cap space to sign them all so could Monahan be moved to make space. Calgary currently has $27 Million dollars in cap space for next year but most of that would have to go to signing those 3 forwards as Gaudreau could be asking for between $9 and $9.5 Million dollars, Matthew Tkachuk could look for around $9 Million and Andrew Mangiapane could look for between $4 and $5 Million dollars on his next contract after scoring 30 goals this year, that could take up to $23.5 Million of their cap space and leave them with under $5 Million in cap space to work with to fill out the rest of their roster. So with that tight cap space a lot of people have said that the Flames could move Monahan with his poor play this year. Monahan has 1 year left after this year at $6.375 Million dollars and while they could buy him out there are a couple of problems, 1) he just had surgery and injured players can’t get bought out and 2) while it would save them $4 Million next year it would also add $2 Million dollars to the cap 2 years from now so I think trading him is the smart option. Moving him to a team like Arizona, Seattle or Detroit, basically moving him to a team who has cap space with maybe a little bit of retained salary that brings the cap hit down for the acquiring team to $4-$4.5 Million dollars would make it a bit better and I could see the Flames because $4 Million dollars could be the deference between them signing Gaudreau and not so moving Monahan is a must for me.
#3) a look at the goalies who could be moved
According to a lot of sources this could be the year where we see a ton of goalies move to different teams, so I am going to look at goalie who are signed past this offseason and could be moved in the offseason.
Atlantic
Toronto’s Petr Mrazek: not only has Mrazek had a awful first year in Toronto, and Toronto has a lot of younger goalies who have played better like Scott, Woll and Kallgren, but they are also pressed up against the cap and have expressed interest in resigning Jack Campbell so moving Mrazek’s contract which would have 2 years at $3.4 Million dollars would be good for Toronto and then they give the backup role to one of their youngsters.
Ottawa’s Matt Murray: in both of his first seasons in Ottawa he has gotten off to slow starts and has been injured for a big part of the season and now that they have Forsberg locked up for a while and could have a Gustavsson or Sogard as a young backup or maybe a cheaper veteran goalie who plays better to be backup, but I think even if they need to retain a bit of salary they should move on from the last 2 years of his contract.
Metro
One of Washington’s goalies: the Caps once again held on to their young tandem in net past the deadline but I believe they will address this in the offseason. Whether it is Vanecek who has been the better of the two goalies this year or Samsonov who some view as the better long term starter, I am predicting that the Caps are absolutely not coming back with the same tandem next year.
New York R’s Alex Georgiev: the Rangers not only are going to have other spots to put their money in this year especially with their cap situation tighter next year then this year, but also Georgiev asked for a trade last year and seems to want a starting job so moving him somewhere to get a return to help a different area of their team would have to be a smart move for the Rangers.
New York I’s Semyon Varlamov: the Islanders have had a rough year this year and while Sorokin has thrived in the starting role Varlamov didn’t even play like a good backup goalie and the $5 Million dollars that he is making right now could be used by the Islanders to get a cheaper backup goalie and maybe put the rest of the Money to a top 6 forward or a top 4 defensemen. So even though Varlamov has been a good mentor for Sorokin for a couple of years now I feel his contract will lead him out of New York.
One of New Jersey’s goalies: the Devils always seem to have some sort of goalie predicament and I think that this year is now different. Blackwood put up some pretty bad numbers and has had trouble staying healthy especially at key times but he is still young enough that he could be a 1B in the NHL, but if the Devils think that his value is to low then maybe they move Bernier who was playing like their best goalie this year before being injured and would only have a year left before becoming a free agent.
Central
Minnesota’s Cam Talbot: now this one isn’t as likely as some of the other ones I have mentioned, but if the Wild are able to resign Fleury like they have been rumoured to want to do, or get another starting goalie, then with their cap problems I talked about earlier I would think they move on from Talbot because he is too expensive to be a backup.
Pacific
San Jose’s James Reimer: after acquiring Kahkonen from Minnesota at the trade deadline the Sharks now have 3 goalies and they only need two so moving one to help in another area would be smart. Although Hill had some problems staying health this year, he is young and so is Kahkonen while Reimer is older and would be a year away from being a UFA and because their was already talk about Reimer being moved around the deadline, I think that Reimer is the one traded.
Los Angeles Jonathan Quick: the Kings have had a nice tandem this year and could go back to it again next year but Peterson’s new $5 Million dollar contract kicks in next year and paying over $10 Million dollars to their net would be hard to make changes at other areas of their lineup so I think moving Quick who would be in the final year of his deal and bringing in a cheaper backup next year would be the move for LA.
And here is a list of all signings for the Central since the trade deadline or MAR 22 to APR 11th.
Central
Arizona
Center Jack McBain who was a Minnesota 2018 3RD pick and acquired by Arizona signed a 2 year entry level contract worth $.884 Thousand dollars per year and it starts this year.

Colorado
Defensemen Kurtis MacDermid and the Avalanche have come to terms on a 2 year extension with a AAV of $.988 Thousand dollars per year. MacDermid has been a valuable piece to Colorado’s team this year as he has been able to help at both forward and defence especially when there was a injury so this is a big signing for Colorado who can benefit from MacDermid in the lineup.

St.Louis
Matthew Peca and the Blues agreed to terms on a 2 year contract extension with a AAV of $.763 Thousand dollars per year. Peca is a consistent AHL forward but has played NHL games on multiple occasions as a call up and that depth will help Blues for the next couple years.
Right side defensemen Matthew Kessel who was a Blues 2022 5RD pick signed his entry level contract with the Blues for 2 years and has a AAV of $.884 Thousand dollars per year and the deal kicks in next year.
Winnipeg
The Jets and Kristian Reichel came to terms on a extension for 2 years starting next year at a cap hit of $.875 thousand dollars per year. Reichel had his first taste of NHL action this year getting into 13 games and getting his first NHL goal and
I believe will challenge for a regular NHL role next year or could be a solid depth forward who could be called up if need be.
Center Henri Nikkanen who was a Winnipeg 4RD pick in 2019 signed a 3 year entry level contract with the Jets worth $.859 Thousand dollars per year and it will begin next season.
Winger Daniel Torgersson who was a 2RD pick in 2020 by Winnipeg signed a 3 year entry level contract with a AAV of $.868 Thousand dollars per year and the deal starts next year.

Washington
Goalie Clay Stevenson who was a undrafted free agent signed his 2 year entry level contract with the Washington Capitals that caries a AAV of $.855 and the deal will start next year.
Washington and forward Michael Vecchione have come to terms on a 1 year extension for next season with the AAV $.750 thousand dollars per year and this is a great depth sogning because Vecchione has only played in 3 NHL games in his career but put up a lot of point in the AHL this past year so signing him will help the Caps depth next year and he could be a in season call up in my opinion.
