Anaheim Vegas
Evgeni Dadonov Ryan Kesler
2024 CON 2RD (VGK) John Moore
Analysis: there might be a problem with this trade but I will give my analysis anyway. The Anaheim Ducks moved a lot of players before the Deadline including Rakell who was a top 6 forward so now they get Dadonov to replace him essentially. Dadonov has been relatively productive putting up 15 goals and 27 points in 62 games and has this year and next on his contract at $5 Million. Now I would see him playing top 6 minutes in Anaheim because even though he isn’t producing at the level he once was he is still a good forward and I like him to mentor the younger Ducks. They also get a conditional 2RD pick in 2023 as the condition is that they could get the 2023 or 2024 pick of Vegas which is going to be determined by the status of the conditional pick Vegas sent Buffalo earlier this year, but a good return for Anaheim getting a older player who can still play in their top 6 and a 2RD pick in a year or two for basically dead cap is a smart and efficient move by Anaheim. For Vegas they get the bad contracts of Ryan Kesler and John Moore. Kesler has had a career ending injury a while ago so he can be placed on LTIR by Vegas and John Moore only counts for $1.625 Million dollars as he is buried in the minors and is signed for this year and next, so this move will help Vegas cause as it stands right now they have cleared $3.4 Million dollars and that could go a long way to activating someone on LTIR. Now this trade could be rescinded due to something about Dadonov’s trade clause and a problem with the Golden Knights acquiring him in the offseason but we will see how that plays out
Carolina Columbus Florida
Max Domi (75% retained) Yegor Korshkov
Tyler Inamoto Aidan Hreschuk 2022 6RD (TOR)
Analysis: the Hurricanes keep up the busy action by the easts best as the acquired Domi in a three team deal. For the Blue Jackets they are getting a very young D prospect as they get Hreschuk from Carolina. Hreschuk is currently playing in college right now but was drafted in last years draft and he looks like he should have a NHL future but will probably play in College for a few years. Then the Panthers get two minors things for being a third party broker, first they get Yegor Korshkov who doesn’t have a NHL contract and is playing in the KHL but could sign with Panthers as the former 2016 pick was traded, and a 2022 6RD pick which was Toronto’s helps them gain a bit of draft capital as well so pretty good for Florida. And finally for Carolina the Hurricanes had Columbus retain 50% and Florida retain 25% so all that was left on pending UFA Domi’s contract that actually went to Carolina was $1.325 Million so a great deal for Carolina to get Domi who has put up nice numbers for Columbus getting 9 goals and 32 points in 53 games and he can play in the middle six for Carolina and also help anywhere they need him, and on top of that the Hurricanes also acquired Tyler Inamoto who is still in college not having signed a NHL deal yet and was a 2017 pick from Florida but the Hurricanes will try and convince him to sign a NHL deal but for all three teams involved I do like this trade
Minnesota Seattle
Future Consideration Victor Rask (50% retained)
Analysis: the Kraken wound up selling off all kinds of pieces but they help the Wild by taking on Rask for Future Considerations. Rask has fallen out of a NHL spot as he has been more a AHL forward this year but he is in the final year of his deal and with Minnesota retaining half of his salary the cap for Seattle is $2 Million which is actually less cause he is buried in the Minors. When he was in the NHL he was productive getting 13 points in 29 games and I know that they have said he will go to Charlotte but I do see him being a bottom six forward during the final games for Seattle and for Minnesota they are just happy to get rid of at least some of that contract.
New York R Vancouver
Tyler Motte 2023 4RD (NYR)
Analysis: the Canucks Trade probably one of their best players this year to the Rangers. Motte is a cheap energy forward making $1.225 Million for the rest of this year before becoming a UFA, and has been productive scoring 7 goals and 15 points in 49 games this year and in my opinion will be a tough to play against forward on the fourth line for New York R and will be trouble in the playoffs for other teams. As for Vancouver they were reportedly interested in getting a 2RD pick for him but instead settled for a 4RD pick in 2023 and that will be a deep draft so as much as Motte was a good player for them they get a draft pick in this deal and for a pending UFA that’s a alright return for me.
San Jose Tampa Bay
Antoine Morand Alexei Melnichuk
Analysis: a swap of young AHL players as Tampa gets Melnichuk and San Jose gets Morand. Both players are in the final year of their ELC and will need new deals at the end of the year and Morand has no NHL experience while Melnichuk did play three games last tyear but didn’t play well in does games and hopefully a change of scenery helps both players get back on track
Calgary Chicago
Ryan Carpenter 2024 5RD (CAL)
Analysis: just like their Alberta rivals, the Flames have also added forward depth for their playoff run. Ryan Carpenter is on a cheap $1 Million dollar cap hit for only this year as he is a pending UFA and has had a decent season points wise getting 3 goals and 11 points in 59 games played this year and should be the fourth line Center in Calgary after Richardson was lost via waivers but Carpenter is a great addition to the Flames team. Once again a team with a pending UFA depth player moves him just before the deadline for a low end draft pick and in Chicago’s case a 2024 5RD pick so the fact that they get a draft pick is a win for the rebuilding Blackhawks.
Colorado San Jose
Andrew Cogliano (50% retained) 2024 5RD (COL)
Analysis: the Avalanche get depth forward Andrew Cogliano for almost nothing in this deal. After acquiring Lehkonen the Avalanche weren’t done as they were able to get veteran Cogliano. Now Cogliano will get a chance to chase the cup in Colorado and is a Pending UFA that only has a cap hit of $.500 Thousand after the Sharks retained 50% of his salary and has had 15 points in 56 games with San Jose as a 3RD line forward but with Colorado being a lot deeper I definitely see him as a 4th line forward/ 13th forward but is a really great depth guy and should definitely help the stars. As for San Jose they were never going to bring back Cogliano and so they get a 5RD pick in 2024 so the pick is a couple of years away from being used but I do like this deal for both sides as Colorado gets a depth forward who can help in the playoffs for a mere 5th round pick to San Jose so a good deal on both sides in my opinion.
Dallas Detroit
Vladislav Namestnikov (50% retained) 2024 4RD (DAL)
Analysis: instead of subtracting the Stars added players before the deadline and the last one was a great depth add for Dallas. Namestnikov is a Pending UFA and has only $1 Million on his cap hit in Dallas after Detroit retained half of his salary and Namestnikov has been producing getting 13 goals and 25 points in 60 games which is good for a bottom 6 forwardand I think he fits nicely on the third line for Dallas and will be able to help Dallas and their playoff push. As for Detroit they did like Namestnikov and probably were interested in keeping him but getting a 4RD pick for him even if that draft is two years away will help Detroit and their rebuild.
Edmonton Philadelphia
Derrick Brassard (50% retained) 2023 4RD (PHI)
Analysis: The Oilers get some help up front with the acquisition of Brassard. Brassard is on a expiring contract and after Philly retained 50% the full cap hit that goes to Edmonton is only $.413 Thousand dollars for the rest of this year and when healthy as he has dealt with injuries this year he has been pretty good putting up 6 goals and 16 points in 31 games this year and if he can be a 4th line depth player for Edmonton I think they are doing good in Edmonton and this is a smooth move. As for Philadelphia Brassard was probably not going to be back so getting a 4RD pick in the deep 2023 draft should make Philadelphia happy as they increase their draft pool and hopefully can compete for a playoff spot in the near future.
Edmonton Montreal
Brett Kulak (50% retained) William Lagesson
2022 CON 2RD (EDM)
2024 7RD (EDM)
Analysis: the Oilers get a solid add on the blue line in Kulak with this deal. For Edmonton they are getting a really good player in Kulak who is a upgrade on Russell and should slot in on the Oilers 3RD pair. He is a pending UFA and only has a $.925 Thousand dollar Cap hit after Montreal retained 50% of his salary so its easier on Edmonton and Kulak has shown he can be offensive at times this year putting up 3 goals and 13 points in 56 games this year and as I said above he in my opinion would fit amazingly on the 3RD pair with maybe a Evan Bouchard. As for what Montreal got in return they get William Lagesson who is a defensemen that has been bounced from the NHL to AHL the last few years and has 4 assists in 30 games played at the NHL level this year and he is in the final year of his deal at a $.725 Thousand dollar cap hit and is a RFA with arbitration rights at the end of the year. And in my opinion the Canadiens are getting a defensemen who can possibly play third line minutes for them and I think he could be a great fit in Montreal. As for the two picks first is a conditional 2RD pick for 2022 as the condition is if Edmonton wins the Stanley cup this year the pick will transfer to a 2RD pick in 2023 so either way they get a 2RD pick, and they also get a 2024 7RD which for now is just draft capital and I think Edmonton did over pay a bit but they were able to get the guy they were after.
Anaheim Pittsburgh
Zach Aston Reese Rickard Rakell (35% retained)
Dominik Simon
Calle Clang
2022 2RD (PIT)
Analysis: the Penguins keep pace with their eastern conference rivals as they also add a substantial name. Rickard Rakell is a pending UFA and his cap hit to Pittsburgh is $2.46 Million after the Ducks retained 35% of his cap. Rickard Rakell was a decent goal scorer this year getting 16 goals and 28 points in 51 games and I believe Rakell is destined to a top 9 Forward and perhaps even play with Crosby or Malkin in the top 6 even but a great addition for Pittsburgh. And for Anaheim given he was a pending UFA the players they got are all good and could be important pieces of their future. First they acquired two pending UFA‘s to make the money work with Simon and Aston-Reese. Aston Reese is the better player in my eyes signed at a $1.725 Million dollar cap hit and has put up 2 goals and 11 assists in 52 games played, while Dominik Simon has a $.750 Thousand dollar cap hit and has 3 goals and 9 points in 55 games and I would expect both players to be bottom six forwards for the rest of the year. Calle Clang is actually a goalie prospect that was drafted in the 3RD by Pittsburgh two drafts ago and the numbers peg him as a decent goalie as he has had a .915 SV% and a 2.75 GAA in 17 games in the SHL and he could remain in the SHL or could sign soon. And they also get a 2022 2RD pick as they get even more draft capital this week but that return of two pending UFA’s a goalie prospect and a higher end pick for a guy they weren’t signing is a piece of magic.
Ottawa Winnipeg
2022 5RD (WIN) Zach Sanford
Analysis: the Jets get some insurance after dealing away Copp. Zach Sanford is a pending UFA making $2 Million dollars for the rest of this year and has had 9 goals and 17 points in 61 games with Ottawa this year. After acquiring him in the offseason Ottawa and Sanford never clicked and a quick change of scenery should be good for the forward and in the Winnipeg organization he should fit in their bottom 6 and I am not sure if I’d put him on the 3RD line but I would definitely put him on the 4TH line as he is a great bottom 6 forward. As for Ottawa they get a 5RD pick in this years draft for moving Sanford and they gave up a young player and 4RD pick to get him so the return is underwhelming in my opinion. But the Senators moved someone who they wouldn’t resign to Winnipeg who can use him in their bottom 6 for a later draft pick this year is a pretty good deal on both sides.
Los Angeles Winnipeg
Nelson Nogier Markus Philips
Analysis: the Jets and King make a swap of prospect defensemen in this deal. There isn’t much on either team as both are in the final year of their contract and Nogier is a group 6 UFA while Philips is a RFA so there is a difference there and Nogier has ten NHL games under his belt so Nogier is the more experienced player but in my eyes both are depth defensemen and unless one of them have a huge amount of injuries does two are both going to be depth pieces.
New York R Winnipeg
Andrew Copp Morgan Barron
2023 6RD (WIN) 2022 CON 2RD (NYR)
2022 CON 2RD (ST.L)
2023 5RD (NYR)
Analysis: the Rangers load up big here getting a prized forward in Andrew Copp from Winnipeg. Copp has been a underrated forward in Winnipeg for some time now but people have started to notice him the last few years as his production increased. Copp is currently a pending UFA With a cap his of $3.64 Million and in my eyes he has lived up the that contract as he has been really productive getting 13 goals and 35 points in 56 games this season and in my opinion Copp will play in the middle six either with Panarin or on the 3RD line, and they also got a 2023 6RD pick from Winnipeg ans they just downgrade 1 round after the moved their 5RD in that draft, but getting a major impact player like Copp and only moving down 1 round in a draft 1 year from now ain’t half bad. And for Winnipeg they were able to acquire depth elsewhere to offset the loss of Copp and the return is nice first they get Morgan Barron who is a young Center who has one year left after this year on his contract at a affordable $.925 thousand dollars per year and he has been in the minors for a while this year having 15 points in 25 games but has also played in the NHL this year having a assist in 13 games this year and I project that if he can develop well enough he can play third line minutes eventually for Winnipeg, they also get two 2022 2RD picks that are conditional first the Rangers 2022 2RD pick could change to a 1RD pick if New York R gets two the Confrence Final and Copp played one 50% of their games, And the Rangers have Winnipeg a decision to choose from the Blues 2022 2RD which NYR also had or the Rangers 2023 2RD and Winnipeg also gets the Rangers 5RD pick in 2023, so for Winnipeg they get a decent Center prospect 2 conditional 2RD picks one that could become a 1RD pick and one that will either be this year or next year and they move up 1 round in the draft so pretty good move for each team and I definitely like this deal.
Arizona Tampa Bay
Future Consideration Riley Nash
Analysis: a simple deal as Nash gets moved back to Tampa Bay by Arizona for nothing. The Bolts just waited for him to clear waivers today and he will probably be moved to the minors but will be a depth forward For Tampa Bay who can come up if there is a injury. Nash is a Pending UFA with a cheap contract of $.750 thousand dollar cap hit and has 4 assists in 49 games with Winnipeg, Tampa and Arizona and a depth move to increase their forward depth is simple and straightforward for Tampa.
San Jose New York R
Anthony Bitetto Nick Merkley
Analysis: a minor trade between the Rangers and Sharks sees a swap of a forward and a defensemen. Merkley is a depth forward going to New York R and has played a handful of NHL games and has put up 36 points in 43 AHL games this season and while I don’t expect him to play in the NHL I think he could come up if there are injuries as he is a group 6 UFA on a cheap $.725 Thousand dollars for the rest of this year. While for San Jose they get Anthony Bitetto who is in the last year of his contract before being a UFA and has $.725 Thousand dollar contract and has been a AHL player this year and I think that continues in San Jose and he will just be a depth defensemen for San Jose.
Calgary Ottawa
Future Consideration Micheal McNiven
Analysis: the Flames got McNiven from Montreal for Future Considerations ans now they send him to Ottawa for Future Considerations. McNiven is a AHL goalie and is basically a 4th string goalie in Ottawa but while him moving to Calgary didn’t make sense to me him moving to Ottawa does as there is a possibility that Matt Murray is out for the season and with that possibility they will need someone from the Minors and with that guy coming up the Senators can have McNiven take his place but I don’t see a fit at the NHL level for McNiven.
Arizona Washington
2023 3RD (WAS) Johan Larsson (50% retained)
Analysis: the Capitals add even more depth in their forward group as they add Larsson from Arizona. Johan Larsson is a Pending UFA and after the 50% retained salary by Arizona his cap hit with Washington is only $.700 Thousand for the rest of this year so it isn’t a big commitment. Larsson has had 6 goals and 15 points in 29 games this season and he has been injured over the last little while and is almost ready to return and when he is ready to return expect him to play on the 4th line maybe in Hagelin usually spot with him injured. And for Arizona they get yet more draft capital as they get a 3RD pick in 2023 which will be a deep draft and a 3RD pick for Larsson is a okay return as I did think he would cost a 4RD pick, but with this trade the Caps get a depth piece for only a third round pick which is a great deal for both sides.
New Jersey Montreal
Andrew Hammond Nathan Schnarr
Analysis: the Devils get a goalie who can help with their te right now while the Canadiens get a young unestablished forward. Now Hammond is currently injured and on IR but if he can get healthy enough soon he should be the starter for the rest of the year with Bernier and Blackwood possibly injured for the year and when he played his 4 games in Montreal he had a a extraordinary .920 SV% and a 2.40 GAA and will be a nice short term fix for Jersey. Montreal got a depth forward in Schnarr and he is in he’s final year of his ELC so he will be a RFA at the end of the year and has showed promise at the AHL level so if he can turn that into NHL success which he hasn’t yet then I believe he could bottom six forward for Montreal in the future but for now this seems like a depth Trade now that could help both teams.
Detroit St.Louis
Jake Walman Nick Leddy (50% retained)
Oskar Sundqvist Luke Witkowski
2023 2RD (ST.L)
Analysis: the Red Wings were able to trade Leddy who they acquired in the offseason for a nice return. In St.Louis the Blues acquired Leddy to improve their back end. He is a pending UFA and with Detroit retaining half of his salary retained they get him for only $2.75 Million dollars for the rest of this year. Leddy has been a good mentor in Detroit and also had decent production getting 16 points in 55 games this year and in my opinion he will play top line minutes and stabilize their top pair probably with Parayko but this is a great addition for St.Louis to help with their playoff push. They also get Witkowski who has experience as a NHL player and he even played this past week with Detroit but I would say he is a depth player and should be in the minors with St.Louis. As for Detroit they get three nice piece for Leddy and we will start with the draft pick as they get a 2RD pick in the deep 2023 draft next year and a 2RD pick is what they paid for Leddy in the offseason so getting that is big. They also get Oskar Sundqvist who is not a rental and is actually signed for this year and next at a $2.75 Million dollar cap hit and has produced 15 points in 41 games this year and has definitely been okay and I see a fit in the bottom six and possibly on the 3RD line maybe with Veleno. And lastly they get Jake Walman who is a young left shot defensemen and they get what I thought was their most pressing need which is a young left shot defensemen who could play for them next year. Walman is a arbitration eligible RFA at the end of the year as he carries a $.725 Thousand dollar contract for the rest of this year and has put up 6 points in 33 games and I think he will play in the top 4 this year and will be a big part of Detroit’s blue line going forward but it’s a good deal in my opinion for both sides.
Montreal Colorado
Justin Barron Artturi Lehkonen (50% retained)
2024 2RD (COL)
Analysis: Lehkonen did end up being moved before the deadline and the best team in the NHL acquired him. The Avalanche are getting a speedy bottom 6 winger in this deal who had salary retained on his contract so he only has $1.15 Million for the rest of the year and Lehkonen is a RFA so he could be with Colorado longer then just this year. He has produced amazing for a bottom 6 forward this year getting 13 goals and 29 points in 51 games this year and I expect him to be a energy guy on the third line for Colorado maybe with Newhook but a winger who can produce offensively and kill penalty’s is a great add by Colorado. As for Montreal they get a huge haul for Lehkonen, as they were reportedly looking for a 1RD pick but I think they got a better haul. First they got a 2RD pick in the 2024 draft so while that draft is a ways away they should get a quality player there and they continue to get draft capital. And the other asset was Justin Barron, Barron is a young prospect who has already signed his ELC and has played 2 NHL games this year but while he has been in the minors he has impressed and was one of Colorado’s top prospects so with him and Guhle possibly making the team next year the future of this Habs Defence looks bright. So to recap the Avalanche get a speedy bottom 6 winger who will be big in the playoffs, and Montreal gets a top prospect and a future 2RD pick for a bottom 6 forward, so in my opinion the trade works out for both teams.
Boston Ottawa
Josh Brown Zach Senyshyn
2022 CON 7RD (OTT) 2022 5RD (BOS)
Analysis: the Bruins get a real physical defensemen on a expiring contract to help the Bruins with their playoff push. Josh Brown has been a decent defensemen in Ottawa having 6 assists in 46 games this season and is a pending UFA who has $1.2 Million dollar cap hit for the rest of the season and I can’t see him being a every game player for the Bruins but I think he can fight for a spot on the 3RD pair and if he doesn’t get that then he is a insurance piece for the playoffs in case a defender got injured, and they got a 7RD pick from Ottawa that can be upgraded to a 6RD pick this year if the Senators play Zach Senyshyn who was acquired in this deal plays five NHL games but the Bruins go down a round or two in the draft and get another body defence for the playoffs. And for Ottawa they get a player in Senyshyn who still hasn’t emerged like Boston hoped for. Senyshyn has been a Minor leaguer for years now and while he does have 14 NHL games under his belt and had 1 goal and 3 points in those games but has played at the AHL level having 31 points in 51 games this season. Now earlier in the season Senyshyn asked to be traded and with his lack of playing time in Boston it made sense and he now gets his wish, and I think after all of the moves Ottawa has made they should call him up to the NHL and place him in the bottom 6 and see if he can have a good finish to the year to earn his next contract as he is a RFA, and Ottawa also got a 5RD pick from Boston for this years draft so all in all this was a great trade for Ottawa as they will move up a round or two in the draft and get a potential notion 6 forward that makes a lot of sense.
Philadelphia New York R
2023 3RD (NYR) Justin Braun
Analysis: the Rangers continue to stock up for this playoff run and this addition is on the blue line. Braun will be a great addition to the Rangers blue line as he has had a very productive year with 5 goals and 16 points in 61 games this season and is a pending UFA on a affordable $1.8 Million dollar cap hit so the Rangers got a veteran presence that can produce and help stabilize the 3RD pair on a young Rangers team that could help them in the playoffs. And for Philadelphia they are getting a 3RD pick in the deep 2023 draft and they will use that pick to get a young player in a years time but at least they got a good level draft pick for a pending UFA defensemen who they probably weren’t brining back.
Nashville Toronto
Alex Biega Future Considerations
Analysis: the Maple Leafove a depth defensemen in Biega to the Predators for only future Considerations. Biega has plenty of NHL experience including playing two NHL games with the Leafs this year but at this point in his career he is a depth defensemen who should play at the AHL level and that is where I see Biega playing unless the Predators have a huge amount of injuries but at least they have depth at the blue line position.
Minnesota Chicago
Marc Andre Fleury 2022 CON 2RD (MIN)
Analysis: the Wild get a major upgrade and boost in net at they acquired Marc Andre Fleury from the Blackhawks. There was a lot of talk about if Fleury would move before the deadline and Chicago and Fleury had a verbal agreement that Fleury would approve any trade for him so he was obviously comfortable with this decision. Fleury hasn’t played like he did last year but he has played relatively well having a .908 SV% and a 2.95 GAA in 45 games this season and is only for the playoffs as he is a pending UFA and the Hawks retained 50% of his salary so the amount going to Minnesota is only $3.5 Million but i think he is now the 1A in Minnesota and will get the bulk of their starts down the stretch and probably most of the playoffs so a definite upgrade for Minnesota. And Chicago wanted a 1RD pick in any Fleury deal and they kind of got a compromise as they currently have a conditional 2RD pick of Minnesota’s this year and the condition is if the Wild get to the Conference Final and Fleury starts and wins four games the pick will then upgrade to a 1RD pick this year but a good deal for Chicago too as they get a 2RD pick that could change to a 1RD pick for a player who was a pending UFA and future was murky.
Los Angeles Nashville
Frederic Allard Brayden Burke
Analysis: a swap of two prospects between LA and Nashville has happened. First Winger Brayden Burke went to Nashville and he has played in the AHL the last four years and at this point is probably no more then a depth forward as he has 17 point in 31 AHL games this year but expect him to be in the Minors and this is the second time he has been moved as he was moved in the offseason too. And for LA they get defensemen Frederic Allard who does have one NHL game he played last year but has taken a step back in the AHL only having 5 points in 36 games, so he should also be in the minors but a swap of prospect hopes for each of the teams that a fresh start is what they need.
Minnesota San Jose
Jacob Middleton 2022 5RD (SJ)
Kaapo Kahkonen
Analysis: to make enough room in net for a deal that we will talk about later the Wild moved Kahkonen to the Wild. Now the Sharks have had a lot lot of injuries in net with Hill and Reimer but are getting a better younger goalie in Kakonen who has had a great .910 SV% and 2.87 GAA in 25 games with Minnesota as backup but I think as much as San Jose kept Reimer past the deadline I at least think that Kahkonen should get a chance to run with the net before seasons end and he is a pending RFA at a cheap $.725 Thousand dollar cap hit but does have arbitration rights but that aside I think Kahkonen could be San Jose goalie of the future, and on top of that San Jose also gets their 2022 5RD pick back after it was moved a few years ago but all in all a possible starting goalie and a draft pick is not bad for San Jose. And for Minnesota they get physical defensemen Jacob Middleton. Middleton will bring more grit to a Wild team beefing up for the playoffs and while he only has 3 goals and 9 points in 45 games he is on a cheap $.725 Thousand dollar contract for the rest of this year, and then if he plays in 14 games will become a RFA but if he doesn’t he will be a group 6 UFA but either way he will be a great presences on the 3RD pair in my opinion will help Minnesota for this playoff run and possibly the future.
Washington Seattle
Marcus Johansson (50% retained) Daniel Sprong
2022 4RD (WAS)
2023 6RD (WAS)
Analysis: it’s a reunion in DC as the Capitals acquire a former face. Marcus Johansson has returned to where he started his NHL career as the great utility player whose having a great year putting up 6 goals and 23 points in 51 games this year and is going to be a key guy. The Kraken retained half of his salary so he comes to Washington at a cheap cost of $.725 Thousand dollars and I really like this fit for both the player and team as I think he would fit on the 4th line where Hagelin would be playing if he was healthy but given how well he has played if I was Washington I would give him a shot on the 3rd line. Now the cost for Johansson wasn’t steep but they did give up a fair bit as Seattle got a 4RD pick in the 2022 draft and that gives them yet another pick in this years draft, and they get a 6RD pick in 2023 which is a late round pick but adding these two picks to their stocked cupboard is great in my opinion and they also got Daniel Sprong. Now Sprong is a decently young forward at 25 years old and is a pending RFA with arb rights at a cap hit of $.725 Thousand, but when he was with Washington this year he was their 13th forward and should get a huge chance to play more consistently with Seattle to add on to his 8 goals and 14 points in 47 games this year and I would think he gets a shot as a middle six forward in Seattle after this trade. Both teams get what they needed as Seattle gets a young player and some more draft picks while Washington gets a depth forward for their playoff run.
Arizona Winnipeg
Bryan Little 2022 4RD (ARI)
Nathan Smith
Analysis: The Jets are free of the Bryan Little contract and the Coyotes are taking on salary for the next few years to get to the salary cap. Little hasn’t played since early in the 19-20 season due to a career ending eye injury and won’t play again so this is a cap dump by Winnipeg that gets them out of LTIR space and given the fact that Arizona will be far below the cap floor for next year it seems as though Little will just help Arizona get to the cap floor as that contract has two more years after the current season at $5.3 Million dollars per year. Now for taking on the bad contract Winnipeg also sent College prospect Nathan Smith who wasn’t going to sign with Winnipeg. Now Smith has had a decent year in college putting up 49 points in 34 games and although he isn’t as great a prospect as McBain I certainly like the addition and as long as they get him on a ELC signing soon I think this kid could be a middle 6 forward for Arizona. And Winnipeg took a 2022 4RD pick from Arizona probably just because they gave up the Little contract in a cap dump but getting some draft capital is huge for the Jets but I think Arizona wins this deal as they once again use their cap space to their advantage.
Arizona Minnesota
Jack McBain 2022 2RD (VAN)
Analysis: The Coyotes get a young collage forward with a high ceiling. This is a good pickup for Arizona as Jack McBain is one of the best collage prospect’s and the only reason Minnesota traded him was because McBain wasn’t going to sign with the Wild. He is a center that had a strong collage season putting up 33 points in 24 games and with Arizona’s lack of Center depth in my opinion he can play a much bigger role in Arizona and I wouldn’t be surprised if he winds up being a top 6 forward in Arizona for a long time but expect a ELC signing soon. And for Minnesota losing a top level prospect who doesn’t want to sign with their team is quite disappointing but getting a 2RD pick in this years draft was good compensation and they will have to hope they can draft someone with that pick that resembles McBain’s greatness.
Winnipeg Pittsburgh
2022 CON 7RD (WIN) Nathan Beaulieu
Analysis: this is a very minor move by the Penguins but they do get better in my opinion. Beaulieu is currently injured and on LTIR so when he is healthy enough to play he will probably be a 7th or 8th defensemen in Pittsburgh cause he is a good defensemen who is a Pending UFA at just over a $1 Million dollar cap hit but if the Penguins blueline is fully healthy then I can’t see him fitting in as a regular. And the Penguins dealt a conditional 7RD pick to Winnipeg, and the condition is if the Penguins win three playoff series and Beaulieu plays in 50% of the games then the pick will change to a 6RD, but I like this deal for both teams as the Jets Trade a pending UFA for a draft pick and Pittsburgh gets a depth defensemen for there playoff run.
