NHL trade rumours
John Klingberg wants out of Dallas
According to NHL insider David Pagnotta Stars Defensemen John Klingberg has asked to be moved out of Dallas and this is just becoming clear to the public eye now as this request was actually awhile ago. Now this has since been clarified by John Klingberg himself after Saturday’s game and said that it is not entirely true but is true to some point it is as he said that it was due to contract extension talks as he wanted to try to get a extension done before the season started but that never happened and as trade talks have started to get cold and he said he’s started to feel under appreciated and that if the Stars aren’t going to give him a nice contract offer then they could at least give him a trade out of there. Now this is a tricky decision for the Stars as Klingberg is a pending UFA and some day will be the most notable defensemen in free agency so they would definitely get a great return for him, however it’s not a guarantee that they will miss the playoffs and if they are going to be in the playoffs do they really want to make subtractions to their team. Klingberg has had a solid season so far putting up a goal and 16 assists for 17 points in 27 games played and is as I mentioned before is in the final year of his contract at a cap hit of $4.25 million dollars. If I was the Stars I would definitely consider this long and hard but given the fact that they are a bubble playoff team at best then I think they should trade him. If they can get a lot of assets for him it would definitely help them and who knows maybe they use those assets to get a different defensemen who can be a top 4 D-Men and help them if they think they are a playoff team. Three teams I personally would keep and eye on would be Tampa Bay maybe he can be this years David Savard, Calgary he would make a great pairing with Kylington and Calgary could move someone like Valimaki, and Colorado as they do lack solid right sided defensemen and could put together a package to bring him in.
Evander Kane has his contract terminated, interest from 2/3rd’s of the league
Early Saturday morning we got news that the San Jose Sharks has placed Evander Kane on unconditional waivers and it was for the purpose of contract termination. The Sharks are saying that the cause for termination was that Kane Flyers to Vancouver while still in protocol in the AHL which is not allowed and on top of that was late reporting to the Barracuda (San Jose’s AHL affiliate) by as much as five days so due to breaking protocol they terminated the contract. Now more reports have come out saying that Kane along with the NHLPA will file a grievance for terminating the contract due to the fact that Kane still had $23 million dollars left on that contract and will now be getting none. Kane has had a amazing amount of off ice problems and he needs to get all of his off ice stuff in check but strictly as a on ice player he has been amazing getting close to career highs last year and it looks like the Saga in San Jose has ended but where will he go after he cleared. Because he cleared waivers he is now a UFA and can sign anywhere he wants and it has been reported as early as today that 15-20 teams have contacted Kane about a new deal with his agent saying that he will sign a one year deal to finish out this season and given the fact that around 20 teams could be buyers at the deadline any team with playoff aspirations has probably contacted his agent cause if he can get his off ice affairs in order then a team would be getting a third line power forward who can score a lot.
Asking price for Jacob Chychrun has now been revealed
On Saturday’s 32 thoughts segment on hockey night in Canada the Coyotes asking price for young stud defensemen Jakob Chychrun was revealed. Now it was said that they are looking for a return that somewhat resembles the Brent Burns trade years ago where Minnesota traded Brent Burns and a 2012 2RD pick to San Jose for Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and their 2011 1RD pick as that was the trade the Coyotes are looking for. So it would have to include a first round pick from a acquiring team as well as a teams top prospect and a solid young player who has a little bit of NHL experience so three solid pieces for young Defensemen Chychrun. And Jeff Marek also said that up to 10 teams have inquired Arizona about Chychrun and he mentioned three teams by name saying Los Angeles, St.Louis and Anaheim are three teams who could get a deal done and are interested in the player. A trade package for those three teams would be, 1) Los Angeles would probably have to give up a first round pick, Quinton Byfield and Sean Durzi, 2) Anaheim would have to trade Max Comtois, Ollen Zellweger and a first round pick, and 3) St.Louis in my opinion would move their first round pick, Scott Perunovich and Klim Kostin so in my opinion those are the three teams best trade packages.
Three goalie candidates for Edmonton to acquire
So this isn’t a recent report or rumour this is me giving my opinion on the current situation in the net of a faltering Oilers team. The Oilers started hot winning 16 of their first 21 games and they had solid goaltending from Koskinen but since then their scoring has faltered and with that Koskinen and now Smith have not been playing as well as and these factors have impacted their recent bad streak that has the Oilers 2-9-2 in their last thirteen games. With the forwards doing okay and the Defence still a doing a great job they need a move at goaltending because in my opinion you can’t win and make it to the playoffs let alone do much damage in them if your goalies are a 1B in Mike Smith and a lower end backup in Koskinen. So I have gone through all of the potential goalies who could be moved and have deduced three potential options for the Oilers that would make their team better.
.1) Marc Andre Fleury
Fleury would be a great goalie for Chicago. Fleury has the rest of the year on his contract as he is a pending UFA at a cap hit of $7.5 million so the Cap would need to be retained a bit by Chicago but with Chicago going to miss the playoffs in my opinion and will probably be moving any pending UFA’s before the trade deadline and in that sense I think Fleury will be traded. He would have to agree to be moved to Edmonton as he has a no movement clause but I think with the team their and possibly trying for a Stanley Cup I think he would except a trade to Edmonton, and he would be a short term fix in net but could help them this season.
.2) Joonas Korpisalo
Joonas Korpisalo would be a amazing not only short term fix but also could be a long term fix. After Merzlikins signed a long term deal to be Columbus starter it started fuelling rumours that Korpisalo who is a pending UFA at a $2.8 million dollar cap hit wouldn’t be returning due to the fact that he would most likely be backup in Columbus. The Oilers have the assets to bring in Korpisalo and I think the Blue Jackets would be open to moving Korpisalo even though they could still be in contention for a playoff spot, and he could come in and be the starter and if he could show the Oilers in the regular season and possibly playoffs that he is a good fit I think he should definitely consider resigning with Oilers.
.3) Semyon Varlamov
Varlamov is another goalie who I think would for the Oilers scheme. Varlamov has this year and next year on his contract at $5 Million dollar cap hit and given the fact that it is entirely possible that the Islanders will wind up being sellers at the deadline and if they wind up Sellers I think that Varlamov would be one of the main guys who would wind up moving. Varlamov has not been at his best this season but has gotten better as the season went on however due to Sorokin’s play he is now the backup and having a cheaper backup would probably better then Varlamov and due to the fact that Varlamov has yet another season on his contract would mean that the Oilers get a starting goalie for two seasons.
These are the three guys who I think Edmonton should target and they would need Koskinen our before any of these scenarios or would need to be included in a trade but I think Edmonton is a goalie away from being a cup contender.
Arizona’s new arena leaning towards not being built
Recent reports have stated that the Tempe city council is leaning toward rejection of the Coyotes plans to make a new arena in Tempe. Apparently three of the councilman are going to vote yes and two are going to vote no wheelie two more are leaning towards no due to the recent debacle that was surrounded by they Coyotes not paying their bills in Glendale for over a year just before Christmas. It is not looking good for the team or the NHL in Arizona anymore and for sometime now they have been teetering on playing okay and relocating. Now I think the NHL has pushed so hard to keep this team in Arizona that they will try and do whatever it takes to keep that team in Arizona but if they just can’t get the Arena in Tempe built and don’t have any other placed to go in the state of Arizona then I would think they would seriously consider a relocation to a placed like Houston as they would probably have better attendance and would be geographically closer to the Central teams in their division and doesn’t occur to anyone that the Coyotes are selling off basically their entire team for picks and prospects and I know that they are going through a rebuild right now but if they are seriously considering moving Chychrun who is the cornerstone of this franchise maybe that is a indication that Arizona will no longer be a franchise.
