Five players who I think are not if they will be traded, but when are they traded.

#1) Jake DeBrusk

He has asked for a trade and there a limitless amount of teams who want him. He has this year left at 3.675 million dollars before being a RFA owed a 4.4 million dollar qualifying offer next offseason, but he has been a solid middle six forward capable of scoring 27 goals and this season has (5G-3A-8P) in 22 games and I think a return of a mid round pick and cheaper young forward who could fill in for DeBrusk and help with Boston’s playoff push would make the Bruins in my opinion say yes to trading him and if they need cap space to sign goalie Tuukka Rask i could see him being moved before the December 19th trade freeze.

#2) Ben Chiarot

This is the player that everyone thinks including me will be the for sure guy to go for the Canadiens. Montreal is a losing machine right now and they are probably not making the playoffs unless a miracle happens so they will probably sell off UFA’s and in my opinion Chiarot is the cream of the crop. Chiarot is in the final year of a 3 year $3.5 Million dollar contract meaning he will be a UFA at the end of the year, and currently has (5G-1A-6P) in 28 games played for Montreal and would be a perfect top 4 shutdown D-Men for any team trying for the playoff’s and I think a 1RD pick and a mid level prospect or pick would be the asking price for him.

#3) Anton Khudobin

Khudobin has fallen out of favour in Dallas and a trade seems imminent. After the Stars called up Oettinger he has ran with the starting job and Hotby has proven to be a solid backup and with Bishop on a conditioning stint in the minors and him having a no movement clause it seems that Khudobin who has been scratched for a few games is on his way out. He would be a solid backup to any team looking for goalie but in my opinion he has some quality of a starter if a team wanted him to be a starter, and he currently has two years left on his contract at $3.33 Million per year, and right now he has a (3.73 GAA and .873 SV%) in six games started but is only two years removed from helping Dallas going to the Stanley Cup in the bubble. In my opinion it would take a mid round pick or a bottom six forward with goal scoring capability for a team to pry him away and with Dallas needing space to activate Bishop I could see him being traded before the trade freeze.

#4) Phil Kessel

It’s not a matter of if but when for this grizzled veteran to be out of the desert. Phil Kessel asked for a trade during the offseason but no teams wanted to trade for him so he’s started the season with the Coyotes. He currently has a $6.4 million dollar cap hit for just this season so if Arizona retained 50% of his Cap hit he could be moved a lot more easily and he is still a very solid second or third line winger as he currently has (4G-11A-15P) in 26 games so even though he is a lot older then when he won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh he can still produce points. I think it would take at least a second round pick or higher level prospect to get him out of Arizona but with some retained salary in my opinion he is absolutely going to be traded before the trade deadline.

#5) Joonas Korpisalo

As the Jackets have had a surprising good start to the season one player I don’t think will be there for long is Korpisalo. Both him and Merzlikins were suppose to be UFA’s this year before Merzlikins signed to be the starter of the future for Columbus and while Korpisalo has takes about all the right thing I think he would leave ether as trade or free agent as the Jackets also have young goalie Tarasov who looks ready for the NHL. He currently is in the final year of his deal being a UFA at season’s end and is making $2.8 million dollars on his cap hit right now but he has a (3.95 GAA and .885 SV%) in seven games started this year. In my opinion Columbus could get some help at the forward group or defence as I think it would take a second or third round pick plus a decent player ether at forward or defence to pro Korpisalo out of Columbus and I think wherever he goes he will get a chance to be that teams starter if only for this year.

BIG NEWS

Jim Rutherford new president of hockey ops for Vancouver and intern GM

The Canucks have signed a new president of hockey ops in Jim Rutherford. Jim Rutherford has plenty of experience being in this sort of role and helped Carolina win the Stanley Cup in 2006 and Pittsburgh won back to back cups in 2016-17. He is also intern GM until he can find someone to take the GM job on a permanent role and in my opinion he has plenty of experience and is not afraid to make big and bold moves, for example he always used to make a significant trade with Pittsburgh well before the trade deadline and he also knows how to build a perfect playoff and Stanley cup contender so this is a brilliant hire for the Canucks.

Trade

Toronto            Chad Krys

Chicago           Curtis Gabriel

Last night we had a trade happen as Toronto sent Kurtis Gabriel to the Blackhawks for young D-Men Chad Krys. Now Gabriel signed a 1 year league minimum deal with the Leafs hoping to get some bottom six playing time but that never happened. I think after the Maple Leafs called up Alex Steeves to fill a roster spot with Marner on IR and Gabriel wasn’t the one called up it became clear he wasn’t getting playing time with the leafs so they traded him to Chicago where he has already been called up and in my opinion I could see him get playing time really quickly. The Maple Leafs got in return 2016 2RD pick Chad Krys who at the moment is just a depth option for the Maple Leafs but has me wondering if they will trade a defensemen soon. He has a point in eight games with Rockford while Gabriel has a 2 points in 13 games with the Marlies and in my opinion the biggest winners of this trade are Gabriel and Toronto’s depth at Defence.

Buffalo            Malcom Subban

Chicago         Future Considerations

Now this trade happened a week ago but I am giving my opinion on it as Buffalo acquired Malcom Subban for future consideration. The Blackhawks wanted to give Subban a bigger role elsewhere it the fact that they didn’t get back even a seventh round pick kind of puzzles me but the bases of this trade was Subban going to Buffalo. The Sabres have Anderson our month to month and Tokarski was placed in COVID protocol so they needed a goalie as Dell was not doing good and they didn’t want to bring up Luukkonen, and Subban was a backup last year backing up Lankinen in Chicago before the Hawks got Fleury si trading him to Buffalo helps Subban but in his first start with Buffalo he was injured and hasn’t played in over a week but there is a chance he plays tomorrow, so this is a short term fix for the Sabres while Subban gets to play at the NHL level again so it also helps him.
