Eichel saga over
After months and months of waiting it has finally happened. It started in the offseason when it was known that Eichel wanted out and wanted a different surgery for his injured neck instead of the surgery the Sabres wanted him to get and there was a long stale mate between the team and player that included Eichel switching savent and more recently threatening to file a grievance to the NHLPA. Now here is what the trade ended up looking like.
Buffalo Vegas
Alex Tuch Jack Eichel
Peyton Krebs 2023 3RD
CON 2022 1RD
2023 2RD
Buffalo Analysis: first they we’re never going to have Eichel play for them again so this is really good. Now they traded picks in the 2023 draft as they sent Vegas their third rounder and acquired Vegas 2second rounder. The first round picks condition is if it is a top 10 draft choice then all picks involved move back a year so the 1st would move to 2024 and the 2nd and 3rd would move to 2024, but with Vegas most likely making the playoffs this gives Buffalo three first round draft picks this year as they also have their own and Florida’s first round pick that is also top ten protected. As for Alex Tuch he was acquired as part of a side deal in the expansion draft and since arriving in Vegas and playing his first full NHL season he has played 249 games and had 61 goals and 78 assists for 139 points. He has 4 years left on his deal after this year at a cap his of $4.975 and should play in the Sabres top six for years to come. The Centrepiece for Buffalo was Peyton Krebs. Vegas drafted him 17th overall in 2019 and he has entered the first year of his 3 year $.863 Thousand dollar deal. He played 4 games last year and added a assist, and due to Vegas having injuries he was able to get nine games in this year and did not get a point but is viewed as a top line center someday and apparently there were some people who thought there was some urgency to get a deal done and now with news that Peyton Krebs will head to the minors I’m wondering if they wanted to not let him go over the ten games played mark and keep him from burning the first year of his deal.
Vegas Analysis: Vegas payed a lot to get Eichel including giving up their best prospect, a underrated power forward, their first round pick most likely from this year and swapped 2023 picks as they got Buffalo’s third round pick but gave them their 2023 second round pick. But this is all about Eichel, so first he’s health as he is going to get the disc replacement surgery as soon as he can and it will take about 3-4 months for him to recover so we are looking at a mid to late February or early March return to action for Eichel. If he can be the player he was before being injured then he can be Vegas top line center for the foreseeable future and could center a line with Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone. He was drafted 2nd overall in 2015 (behind McDavid), and will have four years left on his contract after this year and had played 375 games for Buffalo having 139 goals and 216 assists for 355 points.
In conclusion Vegas gets there top line Center who is out 3-4 months but should be back in time for there stretch run, while Buffalo gets there third first round pick this year, a future first line Center, and a big power forward who can play in their top six. When Vegas is fully healthy they will be a force to be reckoned with and things are starting to look up in Buffalo.
