As the two Canadian teams start the season the Maple Leafs escape with a narrow win over the Canadiens. William Nylander (1) and Pierre Engvall (1) both scored for Toronto. Jack Campbell made 31 saves on 32 shots in the win. Toronto was 1/3 (P.Engvall) on the power play and had 14 hits and 30 shots. Jonathan Drouin  (1) scored the lone goal for Montreal. The Capitals get Ovechkin for game one who passes Marcel Dionne for 5th on the all time goals list and NO. 732 as Washington wins the opener. Alex Ovechkin has two goals (1 and 2) and 2 assists for a four point night, Evgeny Kuznetsov had three assists, T.J Oshie had a goal (1) and assist, Rookie Hendrix Lapierre scored his first career goal while Justin Schultz (1) also scored. Vitek Vanacek stoped 23 of 24 shots in the win. No Mackinnon, no problem as Colorado takes down the revamped Hawks in game one. Nazem Kadri (1), Gabriel Landeskog (1) and Bowen Byram (1) each had a goal and assist including Byram’s first NHL goal, and Jack Johnson (1) also scored for the Colorado. Darcy Kuemper made 32 saves on 34 shots in the win. Colorado was 0/4 on the power play, and also had 25 hits and 36 shots. Sampo Ranta played in his first NHL regular season game. Dominik Kubalik (1) and Connor Murphy (1) both scored for the Blackhawks. M.A Fleury made 32 saves on 36 shots in the loss. Chicago was 1/3 (D.Kubalik) on the power play, and also had 17 hits and 34 shots in the game.

Edmonton recovers from blowing a two goal lead to win in overtime over west Canadian rivals Vancouver. Connor McDavid had 2 assists, Newcomer Zach Hyman (1) scored his first with Edmonton, Jesse Puljujarvi also scores in regulation while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Kyle Turris scored in the shootout. Mike Smith made 36 saves on 38 shots in the shootout win. Edmonton was 1/2 (Z.Hyman) on the power play, and also had 21 hits and 34 shots. Vasily Podkolzin made his NHL debut with Vancouver. Nils Hoglander had two assists, Oliver Ekman-Larsson (1) scored his first as a Canuck and Quinn Hughes (1) also scored in regulation while Bo Horvat had the lone shootout goal. Anaheim found a early scoring touch lead by a young rookie to open the season with a win over the Jets. 2021 3rd overall pick Mason McTavish scores his first NHL goal (1) and added a assist in his debut, Jacob Silfverberg and Issac Lundestrom each had two assists, while Richard Rakell (1), Kevin Shattenkirk (1), and Adam Henrique (1) also scored for Anaheim. John Gibson made 33 saves on 34 shots in the win. Anaheim was 2/5 (A.Henrique, R.Rakell) on the power play, and also had 17 hits and 22 shots. Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Mason McTavish for Anaheim and Cole Perfetti for Winnipeg all had their NHL debuts. Kyle Connor (1) scored the lone goal for Winnipeg.
